Esser 2008 Pinot Noir (California)
Online Exclusive
Price
$16
Pinots at this price are usually pretty awful, but this bucks the trend and offers real value. It shows the silky texture, dryness and rich cherry-cola flavors you want in the variety, with an added touch of barrel age. The result is welcome. Production was 4,000 cases.

Esser 2009 Pinot Noir (Monterey)
Online Exclusive
Price
$12
Too sharp, with a bite of acidity and green tannins, but otherwise a decent introductory wine for learning about Pinot Noir’s charms. It’s dry and silky, with red cherry flavors.

Soft, sweet and simple, with berry, cherry and mint flavors. Not much going on, even at this price.

Sweet and oaky, in the modern style, with oodles of buttered toast, caramel corn, vanilla cream and pineapple jam flavors.

Esser 2009 Merlot (Monterey)
Online Exclusive
Price
$12
Okay for everyday use, like at a big party where nobody cares what’s in the glass as long as it’s red. It’s a dry, full-bodied Merlot, with some decent fruit.

Esser 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (California)
Online Exclusive
Price
$10
Too heavy and soft, like a melted mocha-raspberry sundae. Lacks structure, which makes it taste too sweet.

Chardonnay in name only. It’s a simple, watery wine, with sweet apricot, tangerine and faux oak flavors.
