This is a full-bodied, velvety Cab, filled with ripe fruit and gentle oaking. Lush cassis and blackberry are framed by touches of chocolate, vanilla and baking spices, finishing a touch warm but long, with lingering notes of vanilla and blackberry jam. Drink now–2015.

E&T’s top red, the 1999 Redbrook Cabernet displays excellent depth, rich, slightly weedy cassis fruit and sizable helpings of tobacco and vanilla. The finish is long, and somehow combines mouthwatering flavors with mouth-drying tannins. Drink 2005–2012.

An excellent, flavorful wine, with fragrant peach, nuts and pencilly, toasty oak on the nose. These notes are all reprised (along with some apple) on the plump, medium-weight palate. Finishes long and toasty. 1,000 cases produced.

This top-notch effort from Evans & Tate starts off with layers of elegant oak resembling roasted nuts and crème brûlée, but backs those notes with plenty of honeyed citrus flavors. This flamboyant example of Margaret River Chardonnay should be relatively easy to find in the U.S., with 9,000 cases imported.

Some tasters may find the blatant American oak too much; others will love its soft, toasty qualities. Underneath all of the vanilla is solid briary fruit and a rough, rustic finish that needs six months of bottle age to smooth out.

Shows more structure than most Australian Shiraz at this price point, its firm acidity and ample tannins framing plum and vanilla flavors. Hints of eucalyptus, chocolate and coffee add complexity on the nose and finish. Drink now–2012.

The company may be going through a troubled time, but based on this showing, the winemaking seems as sound as ever. Vanilla and toast elements are nicely integrated with the pear fruit, which adds a fresh, citrusy note on the finish. Medium-bodied, this seems nicely suited as a partner to mild chicken dishes where the subtle nutmeg and cinnamon spice notes will…

Another good Chardonnay from one of Western Australia’s biggest wineries, we liked this wine because it has flavors and aromas that were quite different from those of other wines we tried. It has a sultry cinnamon character on the nose, and stony, even limey flavors, along with some white peach, on the palate. It’s a zesty, structured wine, and is just the thing if…
