Fairhall Downs 2001 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)

  1. $18
Pretty as a picture, a very slightly sweet wine of great fruit and perfect, rich acidity. It doesn’t pall after the first few sips but retains its interest through the long, refreshing finish. Defines Marlborough class.  — S.H.  (11/15/2002)

Fairhall Downs 2005 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $16
This winery has raised its game in 2005, turning out a ripe, showy Sauvignon Blanc filled with gooseberry, pink grapefruit and stone fruit aromas and flavors. Despite its fruit-forward nature, it is reasonably complex, adding mineral and passion fruit flavors on the finish. Imported by New Zealand Wine Imports.  — J.C.  (7/1/2006)

Fairhall Downs 2005 Single Vineyard Pinot Noir (Marlborough)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $27
This shows concentrated fruit together with plenty of savory complexity—black cherry and plum flavors blend with meaty-mushroomy notes and just a touch of herb. Creamy-smooth tannins give it a lush mouthfeel, yet it retains a sense of delicacy on the long, silky finish.  — J.C.  (7/1/2007)

Fairhall Downs 2004 NA in US Pinot Noir (Marlborough)

Darn tasty, combining cherry and cola flavors with dried spices. Plump and soft in the mouth, with a creamy, caressing mouthfeel, it’s surprisingly long on the finish as well. Bravo.  — J.C.  (12/1/2005)

Fairhall Downs 2000 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)

  1. $18
Pungent; filled with boxwood and gooseberry aromas, this is a character-filled wine that’s not for the faint-hearted. The mouthfeel is ripe and weighty, nicely balanced by a tart, bitter-grapefruit-pith finish that lingers enticingly on the tongue.  — J.C.  (5/1/2001)

Fairhall Downs 2000 Pinot Gris (Marlborough)

  1. $20
This single-vineyard wine captures plenty of varietal character in its waxy pear and melon aromas. A medium-bodied wine, with a crisp, slightly spicy-bitter finish, it should prove versatile with food or as an apéritif.  — J.C.  (5/1/2001)

Fairhall Downs 2006 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)

  1. $15
Made in a slightly leaner style than what has become the norm for Marlborough, this starts with scents of passion fruit and a hint of bell pepper, then adds riper melon notes. Flavors of underripe pineapple and passion fruit are crisp, and would provide a good foil for various shellfish dishes. Long and refreshing on the finish.  — J.C.  (7/1/2007)
