Familia Cassone 2007 Obra Prima Gran Reserva Familiar Maximus Red (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $45
Thick and sultry smelling, with aromas of menthol, mint, tobacco, leather and ripe black fruits. Feels good but oaky, with resiny tannins and baked berry and vanilla flavors. Dark, toasty and mellow on the finish. Shows ripeness, balance and lots of oak. Drink now through 2014.  — M.S.  (12/31/2011)

Almost everything about this wine is right on the money, from bouquet and flavors to feel and price. The nose is sweet and floral, with deep, alluring berry aromas. The palate offers a fine texture, with pure, layered blackberry, cola and spice flavors. Satisfying on the finish and complete.  — M.S.  (3/1/2011)

Familia Cassone 1999 Reserva Malbec (Mendoza)

The full-force nose is redolent of lavender, cinnamon, leather and fresh black plums. Similar chewy plum fruit carries the palate, which is undoubtedly more fruity than it is dark. The vivacious finish has full tannins and plenty of verve. This is the type of wine that just flows down the pipe.  — M.S.  (11/1/2002)

Familia Cassone 2007 Obra Prima Coleccion Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $40
Dark and raisiny, and pushing the ripeness meter to the max. This is a dense, sweet, semihot wine with raisin, stewed berry and jammy black cherry flavors. It’s big and broad, more simple than complex, with a raisiny DNA and a boatload of sweetness. Personally, I prefer Cassone’s less expensive, more balanced reserva to this wine.  — M.S.  (3/1/2011)

Familia Cassone 2005 Obra Prima Reserva Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $22
Different than most, with reduced, rubbery aromas that also bring graphite and olive into play. Very thick and syrupy in the mouth, with low acidity leading to chewy plum and blackberry flavors. Licorice and baked fruit notes control the finish, which is short and chunky. Ready to drink now.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

Full, dark, a bit rubbery and quite good overall. The palate has roundness and depth, while the flavors of berry and plum are ripe, balanced and only slightly oaky. Whole and relatively long on the finish. Eminently drinkable.  — M.S.  (12/1/2009)

Familia Cassone 2009 La Florencia Malbec (Luján de Cuyo)

Opens with spicy, almost smoky dark fruit aromas, which are followed by a healthy palate with freshness, good berry flavors and a touch of creamy oak that leans toward vanilla and lacticity. Good all around, with depth and a solid mouthfeel. Nice wine for the price.  — M.S.  (5/1/2011)

Familia Cassone 2008 Obra Prima Reserva Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $21
Woody on the nose, with aromas of tree bark, pepper, cola and black fruit. The palate is tight but under control, with spiced black plum and herbal berry flavors. Toasty and healthy on the finish, but also slightly bitter tasting, with zesty lasting acidity.  — M.S.  (12/31/2011)
