Finca del Valle 2000 Lazzaro Coleccion Familia Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
The extraction on this wine is just right, and there’s a nice black plum, cherry and coffee character. But the nose is marred by a strong hint of wet dog that reared up on two different samples. Without that strange aroma, this wine might even rate higher. Even with it, the wine shows restraint, balance and style.  — M.S.  (11/1/2002)

Finca del Valle 2002 Trinomium Red (Mendoza)

  • Best Buy
  1. $10
Light, with raspberry and citrus-rind aromas. Flavors of cherry, cola and burnt meat lead into a creamy, oaky finish. Fairly low-acid, with a soft feel. The mix is Malbec (70%) along with Cab and Merlot.  — M.S.  (2/1/2004)

Finca del Valle 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  1. $8
Lean and clean, but very thin. Aromas of cherry and raisins lead into a strawberry-raspberry palate that packs little punch. The midpalate is tangy, while the finish fails to register much beyond tart fruit and dry earth.  — M.S.  (2/1/2004)

Finca del Valle 2001 Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $7
Rusty in color, especially for the normally dark Malbec. Some mint and licorice aromas lead it off, followed by malty oak. Rather lean and dry across the palate, with more acids than flesh.  — M.S.  (12/1/2003)

Finca del Valle 2001 Merlot (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $7
Starts off with cola and rooty aromas, but turns stewed rather quickly. A bit syrupy and green in the mouth, with a fairly strong oak veneer. Some drying wood and a touch of cough drop define the finish.  — M.S.  (2/1/2004)

Finca del Valle 2001 Chardonnay (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $7
Bland and indifferent, with butterscotch and chemical aromas. Some apple and citrus carry the palate into a forward but midland finish. Thick and sweet mango and banana flavors are what’s left behind.  — M.S.  (2/1/2004)

Finca del Valle 2003 Lazzaro Coleccion Familia Merlot (Mendoza)

  1. $9
Don’t be surprised if the aromas of beets and cranberry fail to lure you in. The palate, meanwhile, features heavy, awkward flavors prior to a fat, buttery finish. Lacks balance.  — M.S.  (10/1/2004)
