Flechas de los Andes 2006 Gran Malbec (Uco Valley)
Editors' Choice
Price
$22
Big-format Malbec is what we’re calling this new 15.5% wine from Benjamin de Rothschild and Laurent Dassault, original partners in Michel Rolland’s Clos de los Siete project. Round, lush and full of body, Flechas shows muscle but little fat. It’s colorful, dark, full of black fruit and long on the finish. It is modern Malbec done for modern palates.

Flechas de los Andes 2006 Gran Corte Red (Uco Valley)
Price
$38
Quite spicy, with the Syrah element offering a meaty, leathery quality that varietal Malbecs just don’t have. The nose is rich, with some mocha giving it oaky warmth. the mouthfilling palate is packed with kirsch, cassis and blackberry, while the finish is smoky with some fiery heat. Needs another year or two to come together.

Flechas de los Andes 2008 Gran Malbec (Mendoza)
Price
$24
Deep as a country well, with lush black plum and blackberry aromas as well as lead pencil and balsam wood. The palate is solid but not overly tough or complex, and the flavors of cassis, berry and black cherry are more than satisfying. A pure, textbook modern red wine; drinkable now and over the next couple of years.

Flechas de los Andes 2007 Kosher Gran Malbec (Mendoza)
Kosher
Price
$30
This is the kosher version of Gran Malbec made by Flechas, and it’s concentrated and rich, with an oily sort of feel along with fairly soft tannins. Aromas of roasted fruits hint at the olive, baked plum and tempered herb flavors that come later, and the finish is thick and chewy. A broad, succulent but shy Malbec. Drink now.
