Flora Springs

Flora Springs Vineyards and Estate is situated at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains within the Rutherford appellation. Founded in 1978 by Jerry and Flora Komes, Flora Springs Winery has been a family run operation for over three decades. Jerry and Flora's children, John Komes and his wife Carrie, along with Julie and Pat Garvey, have been the driving force behind the winery since its inception and still are today according to our Flora Springs wine guide. While a plethora of different grape varieties are used to produce their Napa Valley and Signature wine lines, it is their single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon series that receives the highest accolades within our Flora Springs ratings. In keeping with the Napa Valley green movement, almost all of Flora Springs' red wines are sourced from its organically-farmed estate vineyards, and all of their wines are crafted in the Flora Springs’ solar-powered winery and caves. To learn more about their wines be sure to check out our Flora Springs reviews below.

Flora Springs 1999 Windfall Vineyard Merlot (Napa Valley)

  1. $50
This is a weighty wine of early drinkability and charm, with the mouthfeel of a good Cabernet, but with silkier, more accessible tannins. There’s a rich, peppery earthiness to the sweet blackberry fruit. Not a blockbuster, it exhibits class, finesse and that elusive quality called style.  — S.H.  (6/1/2002)

Flora Springs 1999 Poggio del Papa Sangiovese (Napa Valley)

  1. $35
California has struggled to produce a super-Tuscan that was at once deeply flavored and classically structured. With this wine, Flora Springs raises the bar. It has all the fruity flavors you expect from the vintage, with the architecture of a fine Napa red. The tannins and acids are softly intricate. Mainly Sangiovese and Merlot, with a dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon.  — S.H.  (7/1/2002)

Flora Springs 2000 Merlot (Napa Valley)

  1. $22
Dark, rich and juicy, this wine goes the extra mile to achieve real depth and complexity. It’s easy to get big, ripe fruit in California, and this wine has it in spades. What’s hard is adding layers of flavor and texture. Dry, with finely ground tannins, this is a white-tablecloth wine.  — S.H.  (11/15/2002)

Flora Springs 2000 Trilogy Meritage (Napa Valley)

  1. $60
When this wine was first produced it was a blend of three Bordeaux varietals, but longtime winemaker Ken Deis has since expanded his palate. This year’s version is mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with some Cabernet Franc and Malbec. A young, dense wine with significant tannins, it is marked by an overlay of well-charred oak, but the core of cassis suggests…  — S.H.  (11/15/2003)

Flora Springs 2001 Wild Boar Wineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $85
A study in balance from the warm Pope Valley region. Shows flamboyant blackberry and chocolate fruit, but has a masculine, firm edge from the tannins and acids, and is also well oaked. In fact, those tannins are big enough to age it for a decade or more.  — S.H.  (10/1/2004)

Flora Springs 2001 Holy Smoke Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $85
A plump, sensual wine, so pretty and voluptuous, it’s impossible not to love. Just oozes sweet, desserty black currant and Indian pudding flavors, lavishly spiced with toasty vanilla. Best enjoyed in its precocious youth.  — S.H.  (10/1/2004)

Flora Springs 2003 Select Cuvée Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

  1. $35
From the pretty golden color, to the powerful aromas of tropical fruits and toasty oak, to the full-throttle flavors and creamy texture, this is a wonderful Chard. It has complexities that unravel as the wine warms in the glass.  — S.H.  (10/1/2005)

Flora Springs 2002 Holy Smoke Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $85
Marches to a different beat. Something about the aroma brings to mind dry, hot summer days when the hills smell of dust and eucalyptus. Turns a lot fruitier in the mouth, with cherries and blackberries and firm, sturdy tannins. Elegant now, and should develop beyond 2010.  — S.H.  (10/1/2005)
