Flora Springs

Flora Springs Vineyards and Estate is situated at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains within the Rutherford appellation. Founded in 1978 by Jerry and Flora Komes, Flora Springs Winery has been a family run operation for over three decades. Jerry and Flora's children, John Komes and his wife Carrie, along with Julie and Pat Garvey, have been the driving force behind the winery since its inception and still are today according to our Flora Springs wine guide. While a plethora of different grape varieties are used to produce their Napa Valley and Signature wine lines, it is their single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon series that receives the highest accolades within our Flora Springs ratings. In keeping with the Napa Valley green movement, almost all of Flora Springs' red wines are sourced from its organically-farmed estate vineyards, and all of their wines are crafted in the Flora Springs’ solar-powered winery and caves. To learn more about their wines be sure to check out our Flora Springs reviews below.

Flora Springs 2003 Select Cuvée Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

  1. $35
From the pretty golden color, to the powerful aromas of tropical fruits and toasty oak, to the full-throttle flavors and creamy texture, this is a wonderful Chard. It has complexities that unravel as the wine warms in the glass.  — S.H.  (10/1/2005)

Flora Springs 2002 Holy Smoke Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $85
Marches to a different beat. Something about the aroma brings to mind dry, hot summer days when the hills smell of dust and eucalyptus. Turns a lot fruitier in the mouth, with cherries and blackberries and firm, sturdy tannins. Elegant now, and should develop beyond 2010.  — S.H.  (10/1/2005)

Flora Springs 2002 Trilogy Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $60
No longer made from just three varieties, this Trilogy has all five Bordeaux grapes. It’s complex but young in cassis and oak, with a dry, dusty spread of tannins. Those tannins will play well now with well-marbled smoky, grilled beef, but the wine should hold through 2010.  — S.H.  (12/1/2005)

Flora Springs 2003 Trilogy Red (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $60
Trilogy used to be made from three Bordeaux varieties; hence the name. The ’03 is all five, dominated by Cab Sauvignon. The wine is a little hard now, keeping itself aloof due to the tannins. Yet it has deep, blue and black fruit flavors and a Margaux-like elegance and harmony, and should develop quite well over the next 10 years.  — S.H.  (9/1/2006)

Flora Springs 2006 Soliloquy Sauvignon Blanc (Oakville)

  1. $25
A deliciously vibrant wine, with oak-inspired citrus peel, peach, fig and creamy honey-vanilla flavors. However, as succulent as it is, from such a great winery, it could be far better.  — S.H.  (12/31/2007)

Flora Springs 2005 Merlot (Napa Valley)

  1. $24
So forward and appealing right now, it’s hard to resist, but this could gain a little traction with a two or three years of age. It’s polished in cherry jam and blackberry-pie filling, with earthy tones of coffee, figs, sage and cedar. The intricate tannins play nicely against the acidity, which gives it an upscale feeling.  — S.H.  (12/31/2007)

Flora Springs 2006 Hillside Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $100
This is a big, tough, tannic Cab that needs time in the cellar. Not showing well now due to the astringency, it has a rich heart of black cherries and minerals, liberally enriched with sweet, smoky new oak. Decanting, and pairing against charred beef, will uplift it.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Flora Springs 2005 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

  1. $25
Flora Springs’ BF Chardonnay was a famous wine in the eighties, one of the first to alert consumers to the beauties of true barrel fermentation. It’s still a great wine, although the price is higher now. Rich and creamy, it shows ripe tropical fruit and vanilla caramel flavors, with a smoky edge of oak.  — S.H.  (2/1/2007)
