Flying Trout 2010 Gamache Vineyard Malbec (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $37
The best wine to date from Ashley Trout, this single-vineyard Malbec seduces with its thick, dense, decadently lush flavors of black cherry and cassis. Licorice, tar, coffee and cacao notes come into play on the deep and lingering finish. If anything, the wine is even better on the second day, as the fruit flavors mature into a plummy Christmas-cake delight.  — P.G.  (2/1/2013)

Flying Trout 2006 Deep River Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $27
Once past the horrid, impenetrable black plastic capsule, the wine rewards you with a firm, textured, interesting mouthfeel. A jumble of berries, spices, bramble, dried leaves and earth, even a dusting of cocoa, comes into play in a balanced, lingering finish.  — P.G.  (4/1/2011)

Flying Trout 2008 Lake Blend Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $28
Essentially a Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon blend (with a splash of Syrah). The young fruit flavors open into a generous, complex and nicely detailed wine. At first fruity and tart, with a sweet/sour plum core, it brings in spices and herbal highlights through a layered finish.  — P.G.  (12/15/2011)

Flying Trout 2008 The Brook Red (Horse Heaven Hills)

  1. $33
A Bordeaux blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, The Brook comes out of the bottle tightly wound, terse, and short. Give it plenty of breathing time for the flavors of prune, fig and plum to emerge, along with streaks of clove and cinnamon. Score could improve with further bottle age.  — P.G.  (4/1/2011)

Flying Trout 2007 Konnowac Vineyard Old Vines Malbec (Rattlesnake Hills)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $39
It’s a little presumptuous to call any Malbec in Washington “old vines” but we may compromise on “older” vines. It’s supple and spicy, with a bright core of berry fruit. It tails off gently, with green tobacco, herb and stem in the finish, but lingers and entices all the way through.  — P.G.  (7/1/2011)

Flying Trout 2008 Mary’s Block Windrow Vineyard Malbec (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  1. $37
Tartly autumnal flavors emphasize mountain berries, dried leaves and forest floor accents. A streak of vanilla, a whiff of caramel and generous, juicy acidity elevate the mouthfeel. From young vines, with great potential.  — P.G.  (4/1/2012)

Flying Trout 2008 Konnowac Vineyard Old Vines Malbec (Rattlesnake Hills)

  1. $36
This pure Malbec from the Konnowac Vineyard is labeled Old Vines, though it’s not clear how old is old. Effusive scents and flavors of raspberries dominate, with a hard candy flavor matched to juicy acidity. There’s a subtle hint of coffee lacing together the finish.  — P.G.  (12/15/2011)

Flying Trout 2009-2010 Deep River Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $29
A two-vintage blend of Cabernet Franc and Malbec, the Deep River Red has a roasted character that’s dark and flavorful, with notes of cassis, coffee and cacao. It’s full bodied and dense, with notes of graphite and pepper.  — P.G.  (2/1/2013)
