Folie à Deux 1999 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

Expensive, but the equal of the cults. One whiff and you’re in heaven, with its gorgeous aromas of cassis and blackcurrants, fine smoky oak and vanilla, and chocolaty mint. The flavors don’t disappoint. Hard to describe the density and concentration of fruits and herbs. This is great Cabernet, superb now but an obvious cellar candidate.

A beautiful Zin, among the best ever, with its near perfect balance of fruit, alcohol and tannins. Gorgeous flavors burst on the palate, black cherries, blackberries, cassis, white chocolate, espresso and cinnamon, to name a few. The wine is totally dry, but so ripe, it tastes sweet. Completely addictive, a joy for lovers of dry, balanced Zins, and a triumph for…

Folie à Deux 2000 The Wild Bunch Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel (Amador County)

Dense and concentrated, a brilliant Zinfandel that stuns with its beautiful array of flavors and near perfect balance. Dry, with soft but luscious tannins, and amazing flavors, including black cherry liqueur and a core of Belgian chocolate that lasts forever on the finish. A bit hot on the finish, with 15 percent alcohol, but who cares?

Wow, is this good Zin, packed with lip-smacking cherry, white chocolate and tobacco flavors. It’s technically dry, but the ripe sweetness of Sierra sunshine fills every sip. The alcohol is high, but this cheerful wine is so good and pure, you hardly notice. Great vineyard, great winemaking, great California wine.

Folie à Deux 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

Quite good for the vintage, a dense, concentrated wine with beautifully soft, complex tannins. Blackberry and cassis flavors drink dense and dry, with balanced acidity. Possesses that elusive but unmistakable quality of elegance and finesse. This is a big, flamboyant wine, but skillfully vinified; good acidity keeps things bright and crisp.

Fruit, fruit, fruit all the way, and loads of it. Blackberry, black cherry, plum and even loganberry. Spice, too. Cinnamon, tobacco, anise, clove, pepper. It's balanced, rich, harmonious, about as fine as Sierra Foothills Zin gets. That's saying a lot.
