Expensive, but the equal of the cults. One whiff and you’re in heaven, with its gorgeous aromas of cassis and blackcurrants, fine smoky oak and vanilla, and chocolaty mint. Wow, is this good Zin, packed with lip-smacking cherry, white chocolate and tobacco flavors. It’s technically dry, but the ripe sweetness of Sierra sunshine fills every sip. Quite good for the vintage, a dense, concentrated wine with beautifully soft, complex tannins. Blackberry and cassis flavors drink dense and dry, with balanced acidity. Fruit, fruit, fruit all the way, and loads of it. Blackberry, black cherry, plum and even loganberry. Spice, too. Cinnamon, tobacco, anise, clove, pepper. It's balanced, rich, harmonious, about as fine as Sierra Foothills Zin gets. That's saying a lot. — S.H. (12/15/2001)
