  1. $13
For ten bucks, you really can’t go wrong with this Grenache-dominated blend. Purple florals and garrigue spice flood the nose, while fruity flavors of black cherry, boysenberry and blueberry keep things rich and juicy in the mouth. Well-balanced with dusty but supporting tannins and an integrated, oak-infused sweetness on the finish.  — L.B.  (2/1/2012)

Foncalieu 2008 Apogée Syrah (Saint-Chinian)

  1. $25
This 95% Syrah wine (with 5% Grenache) is thick and hearty with a strong black fruit core augmented by nuances of flinty minerality, dark chocolate, tobacco and leather. Chewy and firm in the mouth with assertive tannins that linger through the finish. It could use some time to integrate and mellow; try after 2012.  — L.B.  (3/1/2011)
