Heard It Through The Grape Vine SAN FRANCISCO – Symington Family Estates, a week ago, declared 2015 a vintage year for their port wine, specifically Cockburn 2015 Bicentenary Vintage Port (SRP $80/750ml). The vintage also marks the 200th anniversary since the founding of the port house. Yields are never high in the Douro and they were even less in 2015. The Cockburn’s 2015 Vintage Port was made in lagares (vats where grapes are crushed) at the small Senhora da Ribeira winery, located close to both the Canais and Vale Coelho vineyards where the grapes were grown. GEYSERVILLE, Calif. - Francis Ford Coppola has bought a 100-acre parcel in the Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak American Viticultural Area (AVA). The purchase includes the 13-acre Silverwood Vineyard, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec producing bloc whose fruit has contributed to Coppola’s flagship Archimedes wine for several vintages. Coppola bought the property from Silverwood Ranch owners Barry and Jackie Hoffner, considered pioneers of the distinguished AVA. The purchase price was not disclosed. “Since we’ve been sourcing Silverwood Vineyard fruit for Archimedes for years, Francis has decided to rename the lot Archimedes Vineyard, paying homage to his uncle for whom the wine is named,” said Corey Beck, president & director of winemaking at Francis Ford Coppola Winery. Francis’s “Uncle Archie” was named after the mathematician and inventor known for developing the Archimedes heat ray, a device that takes advantage of the sun’s rays – made famous during the Siege of Syracuse, and which is depicted on the wine’s label. Beck added, “We also plan to take full advantage of the sun’s rays by planting about 30 acres as early as next year, all aligned within our sustainability model that we embrace.”
