Frei Brothers 2001 Chardonnay (Russian River Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
A complex and balanced wine that shows green apples, peaches and pears and a nice overlay of oak. You could say that about a lot of wines, but this beauty is so tasteful and nuanced, it’s especially likeable.  — S.H.  (5/1/2003)

Frei Brothers 2003 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)

  1. $24
Shows the delicate softness of Alexander Valley Cabernet, with the elegance that good viticulture and winemaking can bring to wine. This is a really drinkable Cabernet, but it’s not a simple one. Shows layers of complexity in the way the ripe fruit, oak, tannins and acids all play off each other.  — S.H.  (2/1/2007)

Frei Brothers 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)

  1. $24
A lovely Cab made in a drink-me-now style, this polished Alexander Valley beauty is soft and elegant. It has impressively rich blackberry, currant, mocha, anise and tobacco flavors, with an earthy edge of olive tapenade and cola.  — S.H.  (5/1/2008)

Frei Brothers 2005 Reserve Syrah (Russian River Valley)

  1. $24
Not only extremely drinkable, but shows real varietal elegance and class. Dry and fairly tannic, the wine brims with flavors of blackberries, blueberries, chocolate, sweet leather and Provençal herbs, with good acidity for balance. Best now.  — S.H.  (12/15/2007)

Frei Brothers 2003 Reserve Chardonnay (Russian River Valley)

  1. $20
Rich in well-ripened fruit flavors and with a sweet coat of smoky oak and vanilla, this Chard also has a structural integrity based on crispness and vitality. It’s not a soft, creamy Chard, but a firm one, with exotic fruit.  — S.H.  (12/1/2005)

Frei Brothers 2009 Reserve Chardonnay (Russian River Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Good price for an elegant Chardonnay with such richness. The pineapple, lime and smoky oak flavors have a caramelized sweetness, but acidity is brisk, and there’s a fine minerality that makes the wine finish dry.  — S.H.  (9/1/2011)

Frei Brothers 2006 Reserve Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $30
This Gallo-owned winery is better known for Bordeaux varieties, but they’ve worked hard on their Pinot Noir, and the results show in this smooth, balanced wine. It’s made for current drinking, with a silky texture framing cherry, cola, sweet leather, wood smoke and spice flavors.  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)
