Freixenet 1999 Cuvée D.S. Brut Nature Sparkling (Cava)

  • Online Exclusive
Lots of yeast and lees at first, but still tight, with apple, peach and melon flavors. Turns more toasty and yeasty as it opens, with a hint of dried herbs. A controlled buttery note makes for a fine final impression. One of Freixenet’s best.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Freixenet 2004 Brut Nature Sparkling (Cava)

  1. $14
Crisp as it should be, with fit aromas of apple, fresh lettuce and honey. The palate is crystal clear in its delivery of lemon, apple and green banana, while the finish is vivacious and runs the distance. Quite satisfying and fairly serious given its under-$15 provenance.  — M.S.  (12/15/2008)

Freixenet NV Cordon Negro Brut Sparkling (Cava)

  • Best Buy
  1. $10
Keeps the Cordon Negro reputation healthy by delivering easygoing lemon-lime aromas and round citrus and apple flavors. As correct as one can ask for, this large-production cava features pure-fruit character and a perfectly good mouthfeel. For the money, we give it the proverbial high-five.  — M.S.  (12/15/2006)

Freixenet 2008 Burt Nature Reserva Sparkling (Cava)

  1. $14
Dry on the nose, with soda cracker, seltzer, candle wax and lime. The palate is active but settled, with a nice, normal mix of apple and lime flavors. Long, dry and crisp on the finish. Good for seafood and salty tapas.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Freixenet NV Elyssia Gran Cuvee Brut Sparkling (Cava)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $18
Radiator dust, baked apple and other familiar, semirich aromas grace the nose on this more elevated Cava. In the mouth, there’s chunkiness, weight and integrity along with a flavor profile that hints at vinegar but settles on cidery apple and kumquat. Nicely done and different from the mass wines Freixenet is known for.  — M.S.  (6/1/2010)

Freixenet NV Cordon Negro Extra Dry Sparkling (Cava)

One of my personal favorites among the giant collection of Freixenet cavas is the extra dry, which isn’t dry in the least. Just the opposite, it’s loaded with sweet apple and apricot aromas along with peach, melon and candied citrus flavors. Best of all, it maintains its poise while never falling toward cloying or sappy.  — M.S.  (12/15/2006)

For a well-made sparkling wine with balance, flavor and a bit of sweetness, look no further. This one features pretty apple, lemon and yeast aromas prior to honey, melon and apple flavors. Finishes smooth and stylish, proving that a cava can be slightly sweet yet rock solid.  — M.S.  (12/15/2004)

Freixenet 2000 Brut Nature Sparkling (Cava)

Easygoing and balanced, with cream soda and vanilla aromas setting up orange, tangerine and green apple flavors. Crisp and right on the palate, with flowing acidity. Solid, with a touch of green herbs. Imported by Freixenet USA.  — M.S.  (6/1/2006)
