Fuentes 2000 Gran Clos de J.M. Fuentes Red (Priorat)
Editors' Choice
Price
$50
A massive wine with lovely black fruit wrapped is a veneer of classy charred oak. A bomber but a precision one. The plum and blackberry fruit is vital and forceful, while the finish is big, aggressive, supremely built and long lasting. The epitome of brickyard Priorat, so give it a year or two before opening.

Ripe black fruit aromas aren’t overly complex or nuanced but they are generous. Feels tight, gritty and healthy, with firm tannins in front of black cherry and blackberry flavors. Mellows on the finish, where plum and prune flavors take over. Not a hard, fierce Priorat; drink now through 2014.

Fuentes 2004 Finca El Puig Red (Priorat)
Price
$38
Dark in color, with licorice, kirsch, mineral and prune aromas. This registers as a ripe wine with a soft frame. It’s not flabby but it does seem a bit oily and rich, with black cherry and baked plum flavors. Finishes a touch short, but also a little thick. Drink now through 2010.

Fuentes 2002 Finca El Puig Red (Priorat)
Price

This Garnacha- and Carignan-based wine offers a brilliant color and a true bouquet of graphite, mineral, char and black fruit. Thus expectations are high as you head to the palate, which turns out to be sheer, acidic and hard. Amid the scour you’ll pull out plum and blackberry flavors. It gets it two-thirds right; the nose and color are there but the mouthfeel is…

Fuentes 2001 Gran Clos de J.M. Fuentes Red (Priorat)

Price
$68
A solid but flawed wine with eight years of age behind it. The nose is mulchy and gaseous, but with time it settles on raisin and raspberry. The palate is tannic, grabby and strained, with jammy berry flavors and a clampy finish. Has its positive points but aged grace and integration aren’t among them.
