Classic Cabernet, and ageworthy. Shows balanced blackberry, coffee, black olive, Provençal herb and oak flavors. It has complex tannins, and is very dry. This is not a long hangtime, superripe Cab, but strives for balance and elegance and succeeds. Best now–2016.

Very dry, this Cabernet comes down on the side of elegance and structure rather than power. It feels firmly tannic in the mouth, offering blackberry, black currant and cedar flavors, with an undertow of minerality and a grounding of coffee and herbs. Very fine and sleek, and raises Dry Creek Valley’s Cabernet profile considerably. Now–2012.

An interesting and complex Chard marked by intense minerality. Calls to mind Chablis in the acidity, dryness and racy taste of cold steel. Also in the flavor mix are tart green apples, pineapples, limes, cinnamon spice and creamy lees.

Gallo Family Vineyards 2003 Chardonnay (Northern Sonoma)

Gallo has held this Chard more than 4 years before release; the reason may be an acidic tightness that still dominates the wine. It’s deep in mineral-infused apricot and quince fruit. The barrel regimen consisted of 100% new oak. It’s a big, absolutely dry, almost rasping wine, and may be one of those rare California Chards capable of aging. See what it does after 2008.

Good price for a Zin of this power and deliciousness. Shows exceptionally ripe flavors of blackberry jam, pepper, chocolate and anise, and while there’s a sweet edge, the wine is basically dry.

Gallo Family Vineyards 2006 Sonoma Reserve Chardonnay (Sonoma County)

The oak really stands out, so if you’re sensitive to that, avoid. But others, including this reviewer, will find the toasty vanilla, meringue, butterscotch and char flavors perfectly in keeping with the ripe tropical fruit, pear and Meyer lemon flavors.

Gallo Family Vineyards 2004 Two Rock Vineyard Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast)

The vintage was a good one for Gallo Chardonnays, and with this bottling, held back for more than three years, they have another winner. Dry and crisp, this pineapple- and green apple-flavored wine has an earthiness suggesting sweet tobacco and fresh herbs.

Gallo Family Vineyards 2004 Reserve Zinfandel (Sonoma County)

Perhaps because this is a new line and the Gallos are putting their best foot forward, this Zin is far richer than Gallo’s Dancing Bull Zin, which is only a dollar less. It’s lush in briary wild berry, cherry pie, blueberry, cocoa and coffee flavors, and nicely dry. Good enough to accompany your best Zin-friendly food.
