Gancedo 2005 Xestal Mencía (Bierzo)

  1. $32
A touch dusty on the nose, but otherwise it’s all about forward black fruit. The palate is straightforward power with blackberry-driven flavors, and there are several layers of depth to the wine. Warm and baked on the finish, and designed to drink sooner rather than later. Yummy, rich stuff.  — M.S.  (12/15/2009)

Score Chasers: Spain 2011
Dark and crusty on the nose, with full-force aromas of blackberry, licorice and mineral. The palate is full but not too tight or hard; there’s a welcome softness to the wine but also nice acidity. Tastes great, with loads of black fruit, chocolate and toast. Modern, with plenty of oak. Drink now through 2014.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Gancedo 2006 Mencía (Bierzo)

  1. $29
Smooth and powerful on the nose, with oak-based aromas and clean berry fruit. There’s elegance as well as richness to the deep berry, chocolate and vanilla flavors. Finishes with toffee and coffee, but it’s not particularly woody even if it is fairly oaky. A decidedly modern and international type of wine. Drink now through 2013.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Gancedo 2008 Capricho Val de Paxariñas Godello (Bierzo)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $24
A little dusty and spicy on the nose, with pear and apple checking in. The palate has spritz and acidity, while the flavors run sweet with ripe apple, pineapple and tropical fruit. Tastes like orange candy on the finish, with a sugary lasting impression. Good but needs more balance and harmony.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)
