Gemtree 2007 Cadenzia Grenache-Tempranillo-Shiraz Red (McLaren Vale)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
The twist here is the inclusion of Tempranillo in the blend, resulting in a uniformly dark, plummy wine, amply framed by toasty oak. It’s full bodied and lushly textured on the palate, then firms up and adds some spice on the finish. Drink now–2017.  — J.C.  (10/1/2010)

Gemtree 2008 Uncut Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Full-bodied almost to the point of excess, this boldly flavored Shiraz features hints of tar and cola on the nose, but more mainstream flavors of blackberries and vanilla on the palate. Savory, meaty nuances provide just enough complexity, folding in hints of maple syrup on the finish. Drink now–2014.  — J.C.  (2/1/2011)

Gemtree 2004 Obsidian Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  1. $50
Gemtree’s Obsidian Shiraz ratchets up the intensity from its usual offerings, adding structure and richness to straight-ahead aromas and flavors of cherries, coffee and vanilla. The wood sticks out a little on the finish, so give it another year or two in the bottle, then drink it over the next 10.  — J.C.  (4/1/2009)

Score Chasers: NZ & AU 2011
Some Australian wineries are still “overdelivering,” as they like to say, and this round of Gemtree releases are a good example of that. The 2008 Bloodstone features flagrant vanilla aromas, but balances those with cracked pepper and grilled meat notes, red berries and traces of coffee and olive. The tannins of this full-bodied red are creamy soft, turning just…  — J.C.  (2/1/2011)

Gemtree 2008 Tatty Road Red (McLaren Vale)

  1. $20
This Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cab Sauvignon (30%), Petit Verdot (25%), Merlot (25%) and Cab Franc (20%) manages to be crisp and bright in acids while the tannins are ripe and plush. Tart berry flavors are marked by a not-so-subtle kiss of vanilla-laden oak. Probably at its best over the next few years.  — J.C.  (12/31/2010)

Gemtree 2002 Obsidian Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  1. $40
A very good wine; though the fruit is the same as in the Uncut, this wine spends 10 months more in oak—all new French oak. And it shows. The nose is dusted with dry spices, and the palate has considerable wood-derived bells and whistles hiding the plum fruit underneath. Hold for five years, and dive in.  — D.T.  (3/1/2005)

Gemtree 2008 Tadpole Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  • Best Buy
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $14
The Tadpole Shiraz is Gemtree’s entry-level offering, but it’s still a fine effort, with predominantly plummy flavors, but enough of a savory edge to keep it from being simply jammy. Tannins are creamy-soft, making for immediate accessibility. Drink now.  — J.C.  (2/1/2011)

Gemtree 2008 Luna Roja Tempranillo (McLaren Vale)

  1. $20
Cropped at less than two tons per acre, this is a full-bodied, creamy-textured Tempranillo marked by vanilla-tinged oak. Black cherries and plums comprise the core, with embellishments of tobacco adding complexity to this lush, easy-drinking wine. Drink it over the next several years.  — J.C.  (5/1/2011)
