Genium Celler 2004 Costers Vi de Guarda Red (Priorat)

  1. $70
This is the type of Priorat that makes us stand up and take notice. The nose is deep and pure, with a complex dishing of toast, schist and black fruit. The palate is live-wire yet not the least bit hard; proper doses of black cherry and snappy black plum flavors are long, sinewy and natural. Drink now–2014.  — M.S.  (10/1/2008)

Genium Celler 2004 Ecològic Red (Priorat)

  1. $39
You want color and heft? You get that here, and more. Dark, grapy aromas are lush more than rough and tight, while the palate is full of sassy black cherry fruit and a fair share of richness. No doubt this jam-packed blend of Garnacha, Merlot and Carignan is solid and rewarding. 250 cases produced.  — M.S.  (8/1/2007)

Genium Celler 2004 Red (Priorat)

  1. $32
This muscular youth proves that Priorat can deliver fleshy, modern wines. Or maybe it’s the 20% Merlot that’s softenening the Garnacha and Carignan. Either way, look for lush plum and black cherry flavors floating on a rich, heady palate. This is more Escalade or Range Rover than sports car.  — M.S.  (8/1/2007)

Genium Celler 2009 Fresc Red (Priorat)

  1. $32
Concentrated and strong on the bouquet, with grit, leather, heat and bold berry aromas. Choppy tannins give the palate a hard feel, while the flavor profile runs warm, baked and sweet, with plum and berry fruit thrown in. Good but a little hard and hot. Just 450 cases made.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Genium Celler 2005 Red (Priorat)

  1. $41
Big on the nose, with regionally typical aromas of mineral, black fruit and herbs. The palate is a touch rough and hot, but it houses forward black plum, raisin and chocolate cake flavors. Fleshy and pretty big, but sort of wayward on the finish. Shows good structure and power. Imported by Grapes of Spain.  — M.S.  (10/1/2009)

Genium Celler 2006 Ecològic Red (Priorat)

  1. $41
Slightly fiery and hot on the nose, but there’s enough berry, cherry and dusty leather to keep it positive. The palate is more sheer and sharp than expected, with piercing raspberry, razor’s edge acidity and only a touch of back-end sweetness. Juicy but short and searing.  — M.S.  (2/1/2011)

Genium Celler 2009 Ximenis Pedro Ximénez (Priorat)

  1. $40
One taste and you can see the correlation between this Priorat dry PX and certain fino-style Sherries. It’s nutty and dry as a bone, with almondy aromas. Crisp acidity provides backbone and the flavors of barely sweet pear, apple and white peach are fully dry and don’t push the envelope. Clean but limited in scope.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)
