Gloria Ferrer

Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards was established in 1986 making it the first sparkling wine house in the Carneros region of Sonoma County. The Gloria Ferrer vineyards, which were actually planted in 1982 and encompass 335 acres, are planted with mostly Pinot Noir grapes along with a handful of Chardonnay. The Ferrer’s have been growing grapes since the 1500s and are the family behind La Freixeneda (producers of Freixenet Cava) in Catalonia, Spain. Their goal is to bring their Spanish wine growing knowledge and tradition into the Gloria Ferrer wines. Gloria Ferrer Winery was among the first in California to implement the Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices according to our Gloria Ferrer wine guide. Their portfolio of wines includes 9 sparkling options, ranging from the value Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs up to their top tier Carneros Cuvee, and over a half a dozen still wines also made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Both the sparkling and still wines consistently receive high ratings in our Wine Enthusiast Gloria Ferrer ratings.

Gloria Ferrer 2002 Rust Rock Terrace Pinot Noir (Carneros)

  1. $40
This is a good Pinot but it has some problems that keep the score limited. There’s a mulchy earthiness, a sharp, dry mintiness, that limits enjoyment of the underlying cherry flavors, and which is unlikely to age out.  — S.H.  (12/15/2006)

Gloria Ferrer NV Blanc de Noirs Sparkling (Sonoma County)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
Almost exclusively Pinot Noir, this is a deeply colored, full-bodied wine, rich and crisp in strawberries, lees and vanilla. A touch of Chardonnay adds a refreshing note of lime. Delicious and easy to like, especially at this price.  — S.H.  (12/31/2009)

Gloria Ferrer 1999 Pinot Noir (Carneros)

  1. $24
This wine is aromatically challenged; it starts off funky, with intense barrel aromas that work against you. In the mouth, sweet candied plum-like fruit is jostled by earth and mushroom notes, while the finish is tight and tannic.  — W.E.  (10/1/2002)

Gloria Ferrer 2002 Pinot Noir (Carneros)

  1. $26
Weak and tart, with cola, herb and mocha flavors. Finishes watery and diluted.  — W.E.  (11/1/2004)

Gloria Ferrer 2002 Blanc de Blancs Sparkling (Carneros)

  1. $24
A little rough, and with an evidently high dosage, this peach-fruited wine has a cloying quality and a finish that’s too sweet, even by California standards.  — S.H.  (12/31/2005)

Gloria Ferrer 1998 Merlot (Carneros)

  1. $23
A bit beefy in the nose, the wine has a distinctly herbal quality, with hints of blackberry and cherry behind it. The finish is moderate with a touch of weediness.  — J.M.  (12/1/2001)
