Grand Rêve 2007 Collaboration Series Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Red Mountain)
-
$75
The purity is astonishing—a ringing bell of vivid, racy blueberry, blackberry and black cherry fruit. The 100% new French oak is completely absorbed into the wine, its flavors unobtrusive. The essence of the vineyard and the grape, this is a must-taste for lovers of Cabernet Sauvignon and Red Mountain. Sleek, tight, extremely youthful but polished and dense.

Grand Rêve 2006 Collaboration Series III Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Red Wine Syrah (Red Mountain)
-
$45
Collaboration Series III is also Syrah, a blend of four clones, giving a meatier, less toasty wine than the Series II Syrah, but with the same imprint of Ciel du Cheval fruit. Flavors include various herbs and spices, green coffee, dark fruits, streaks of espresso and baker’s chocolate. More complex flavors unravel as it breathes—streaks of licorice, smoke…

Grand Rêve 2006 Collaboration Series I Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Red Wine (Red Mountain)
-
$55
Very fragrant and surprisingly soft upon entry, this blend ultimately lives up to the vintage’s reputation for compact, unyielding red wines. This wine, made by Cadence’s Ben Smith, manages to be both approachable and at the same time cellar-worthy. Cassis, plum, and the vineyard’s characteristic minerality thrust up through the palate like basalt monoliths.

Grand Rêve 2007 Collaboration Series III Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Red Wine Syrah (Red Mountain)
-
$45
Crafted by Mark McNeilly (Mark Ryan winery), this pure Syrah was cellared in about one third new oak. Tasted shortly after its release, it still showed a bit of a liquorous new oak scent, but without turning up the heat in the finish. The fruit is young and bright, a mix of raspberry, cassis and red licorice.
