Grans-Fassian 2006 Trittenheimer Apotheke Beerenauslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $317
Yes, this wine is supersweet, but it’s also pristine in its clarity. Despite layers of honeyed richness, the aromas and flavors of lime and pineapple provide great energy and focus; there’s even hints of slate-driven minerality on the nose and the long, mouthwatering finish.  — J.C.  (12/15/2008)

  1. $40
This estate has been turning out better and better wines nearly every year, and this may be its best yet. A fabulous bouquet of honeyed slate, green apples and limes is followed by flavors that are sweet yet balanced, with great freshness and racy acidity. Finishes long and mouthwatering. Not only about power, there’s also elegance to spare.  — J.C.  (12/1/2006)

  1. $38
This striking spätlese comes across as lush and decadent, yet without losing any focus. Crushed stones impart a sense of minerality on the nose, palate and finish, while the roundness comes from notes of honey, apple blossom and orange marmalade. Long and pristinely pure on the finish. Drink now-2030.  — J.C.  (12/15/2009)

Grans-Fassian 2007 Trittenheimer Apotheke Auslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $57
This auslese shows tremendously lush fruit and a wonderful sense of purity to its aromas and flavors. Scents of pineapple, vanilla and crushed stone lead the way, followed by notes of tropical fruit wrapped around a core of slate. Drink now–2015.  — J.C.  (8/1/2009)

Grans-Fassian 2007 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Spätlese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $37
A succulent style that should have enormous appeal. Honey, pineapple and melon aromas and flavors show off Riesling’s fruity side, but the wine’s minerality keeps it from seeming overly simple.  — J.C.  (8/1/2009)

Grans-Fassian 2005 Trittenheimer Kabinett Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $21
It’s stony and minerally on the nose, but also boasts vivid pear, melon and green-apple scents. The flavors verge on tropical, mixing ripe pear and melon notes with underpinnings of tangerine. It’s all wrapped in a plump, succulent texture and features a long, lipsmacking finish.  — J.C.  (12/1/2006)

Grans-Fassian 2003 Trittenheimer Apotheke Spätlese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $30
Boasts plenty of bright springtime aromas—rainwater and apple blossoms—but adds deep bass notes of mineral and earth. Honeyed tree fruits on the palate are sweet, but balanced by plentiful acids (not tart, malic acidity, but riper, tartaric acids). Thickly concentrated, yet light-bodied and fresh. Another 2003 that is drinkable now, yet should age for 10–15 years.  — J.C.  (12/15/2004)

Grans-Fassian 2001 Trittenheimer Kabinett Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Best Buy
  1. $14
This is an atypically big, mouth-filling kabinett, full of stone fruits, such as peach and nectarine, as well as some red fruits—perhaps cherries. Despite its richness and kaleidoscopic waves of fruit, it never seems heavy, coming elegantly to a long and mouthwatering close.  — J.C.  (3/1/2003)
