Groth 2008 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $125
A huge Cabernet, in the best sense of the word. It wasn’t the easiest vintage, as 2007 was, but meticulous winemaking did the job, resulting in this amazingly rich, impressively ripe wine that’s drinkable now and will develop for many years. The fruits veer toward blackberries, cherries and cola, and the tannins are soft and refined. One hundred percent new French…  — S.H.  (2/1/2012)

Groth 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  1. $55
Dazzling. Easily the best Groth Cabernet in many years, dry, full-bodied and crazily rich in blackberries, cherries, tobacco and new oak. The ripe, sweet fruit is held in check by brisk acidity and firm tannins, resulting in an exciting tension. Beautiful now, and should develop gracefully throughout the decade.  — S.H.  (2/1/2012)

Groth 1995 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  1. $125
An elegant wine with lean yet fairly intense fruit in the black-cherry/ plum range. Past the opening fruit there are touches of chocolate and dashes of spice. Because of its harmony and balance, the wine is drinking quite well now, but should be even better with five to eight years of bottle age.  — L.W.  (7/1/1999)

Groth 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $40
This wine offers balanced and focused fruit from the opening right through to the long, velvety smooth finish. The tannic structure is firm but not aggressive. The wine is drinking beautifully now but should be even better with five to eight years of bottle age.  — L.W.  (11/1/1999)

Groth 2006 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $150
Not very pleasant now due to the sharpness and bitterness of the texture, as well as the wood tannins that come from aging in 100% new oak. The flavors are of primary fruit blackberries, cherries and black currants. This is a big wine now lacking in polish, but it should develop in the cellar and begin to acquire bottle bouquet after 2012, continuing to glide…  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Groth 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  1. $50
This is a Cab that wouldn’t stand out in a competitive blind tasting, because it’s not a bruiser. Instead, it can claim balance, finesse, elegance and harmony. Everything’s understated. But aficionados will savor the beautiful fruit and classic structure.  — S.H.  (12/1/2005)

Groth 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  1. $55
Young now, marked by hard tannins that accentuate the acidity. The flavors are forward and jammy, suggesting blackberries, cherries, orange zest and sweet, smoky cedar wood. Rough-hewn now, with an angular feeling, but should develop softness and roundness after 2012.  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Classic California Sauvignon Blanc, featuring crisp melon flavors with a touch of lemon and a spicy herbal edge. The long finish echoes the opening fruit.  — L.W.  (11/1/1999)
