Guardian Cellars 2008 The Alibi Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot (Red Mountain)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $39
A full-flavored blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, sourced from the Klipsun, Ciel du Cheval, and Kiona vineyards. Red Mountain is noted for its reds, and this one delivers. Mixed plum, cherry and cassis fruit is set against subtle streaks of chalk, graphite and ash. Complex and detailed, this young wine will blossom with further bottle age.  — P.G.  (12/15/2011)

Guardian Cellars 2008 Stillwater Creek Vineyard Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $30
You’ll find great purity of fruit in this 100% Syrah, aged in 50% new French oak. Berries and plums fill in a gorgeous midpalate, then streaks of spice and coffee kick in, with a lovely vein of cured meat. In short, a classic cool-climate Syrah, beautifully rendered.  — P.G.  (12/15/2011)

Guardian Cellars 2009 Chalk Line Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $25
Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are in the blend, and this may be the best Chalk Line ever. Cherries and chocolate rule here, with tasty highlights of toast and caramel. Smooth and supple, it glides across the palate into a satisfying finish with a lick of citrus to liven it up.  — P.G.  (12/15/2011)

Guardian Cellars 2007 Conner Lee Vineyard Gun Metal Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $37
The fruit is ripe and the tannins firm; winemaker Jerry Reiner is able to craft very ripe fruit while keeping the varietal character of the Cabs—earth and herb, with a touch of stem. Deep and substantial, this should age well for a decade or more.  — P.G.  (12/31/2010)

Guardian Cellars 2007 Stillwater Creek Vineyard The Wanted Red Cabernet Sauvignon-Cabernet Franc (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $37
Strong, full-bodied, tannic and muscular, this 50-50 blend of Cab Sauvignon and Cab Franc seduces you with sweet berry fruit, backed with stiff tannins and well-modulated streaks of iron and earth. For Cab freaks this is a gold mine of flavor, but it will need decanting or cellaring. It should keep for a decade or more.  — P.G.  (12/31/2010)

Guardian Cellars 2006 Chalk Line Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $35
A picture-perfect mix of fruit, acid, stone and tannin. The fruit is sweet and ripe, the acid provides a natural underpinning, the tannins are polished and there are hints of minerality, along with tobacco, licorice and chocolate. Nicely done; this is a new winery to watch.  — P.G.  (3/1/2009)

Guardian Cellars 2006 Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $35
All the fruit is from Wahluke Slope vineyard, with 2% Viognier. Aged for 17 months in French oak, this is a big step up from the 2005. The fruit scents are bold and pure, showing lush berry notes and leading gracefully into a darker mix of smoke, coffee grounds, tobacco and licorice. There is a lot of barrel influence, but the fruit is so good that it can take it…  — P.G.  (3/1/2009)

Guardian Cellars 2009 Angel Sauvignon Blanc (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Though crafted in 100% new French oak, this retains its strong varietal character, but some of the acidic sharpness is softened by the barrel fermentation. Fresh and clean, it brings sweet grain and herb flavors to a mix of pineapple and green apple fruit. Nice, snappy, tart finish.  — P.G.  (12/31/2010)
