Handley

Founded in 1982, Handley Cellars and Winery is a small family-owned operation located at the northwest end of Anderson Valley in Mendocino County. There are almost 60 acres of Handley vineyards planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris that give way to an approximate 14,000 case production annually. Milla Handley is the founder and head winemaker overseeing the production of the entire portfolio of Handley wines. Our Handley wine reviews note that Milla ventured out on her own after gaining winemaking training at Chateau St. Jean and Edmeades vineyards. Her goal is to create balanced wines that possess distinctive varietal characteristics while reflecting the terroir in which they were grown. Handley 2009 RSM Vineyard Pinot Noir (Anderson Valley)

  1. $52
This is so succulent you’ll want to finish the entire bottle with a great steak or chop. It explodes in the mouth with a sunburst of cherries and raspberries, spiced with cinnamon, smoky oak and orange zest. This is one of Handley’s best in years.  — S.H.  (9/1/2012)

Handley 1996 Brut Rose Sparkling (Anderson Valley)

  1. $25
This is a beautiful wine to look at for the coppery-gold color and the fierce explosion of fine bubbles. Smells luscious, with subtle raspberry, lime, bread and lees aromas. This is the best rosé Handley has ever produced: amazingly rich, long and full-bodied, with the creamy smoothness of Champagne.  — S.H.  (12/1/2000)

Crisp and very floral, this is a beautiful showcase of Anderson Valley’s cool climate and commitment to Alsatian varieties. There’s a great depth of flavor here—fig, grapefruit, lime and orange peel—not to mention tremendous minerality. This is a wine that can be sipped all day long or enjoyed with fish, poultry or an onion tart.  — V.B.  (5/1/2013)

Polished and elegant, this Chard has real complexity. Works beautifully to integrate its dry apple, peach and pineapple flavors, oak-driven cream and crisp acids into a coherent whole.  — S.H.  (10/1/2005)

Handley 2001 Ferrington Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc (Anderson Valley)

Bites into the palate with upfront acids, but it’s not a tart wine because the fruity flavors are so fabulously rich. Lemon meringue, sweet lime, and dusty oriental spices like cinnamon are delicious. Really good wine, and addictive. —S.H.  — S.H.  (3/1/2003)

A wisp of a wine, bright in lime, nutmeg and honeysuckle, with balanced acidity and mouthwatering texture and concentration. Handley’s Gewürztraminer is always the right call when Thai or Chinese is on the menu. A nice introduction or re-introduction to Anderson Valley whites.  — V.B.  (5/1/2013)
