This sticky pulls out all the stops; where words like “ripe, full, rich and sweet” are detriments to some wines they only explain this one’s attractiveness. Apricot aromas are laid on thick, backed by some citrus and fig. Apricot, passion fruit, mango and burnt sugar emerge on the palate and through the finish. The opaque, heavy body announces that this is a serious wine, and it is. Still youthful despite several years of bottle age, there’s plenty of toast, coffee, menthol and wood on the nose. Dark berry fruit (cassis) and tobacco flavors. A big, solid bruiser that has deservedly won a truckload of awards in its native Down Under.

An excellent value, Hardys’ Oomoo Shiraz can run with a pack twice its price, offering earth and cola aromas and a deep undercurrent of blackberries. It’s full-bodied, mouthfilling yet structured. Opens with a inky nose of tart black fruits, a spice-herb element and saddle leather—with a definite horse-stable note some tasters found complex, others just rough. The dark toasty-earthy palate has a soft, even mouthfeel, and it finishes with espresso, earth and an almost bitter note.
