Hestan 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $100
Massive, dramatic, beautiful, intense, but young and firm in tannins, with a cut of fresh acidity. Shows concentrated blackberries, black currants, violets, minerals and cedar, leading to a long, penetrating finish. Very great Cabernet, vibrant and potent, just tremendous in structure. Potentially a near-perfect wine with 4–6 years in the bottle.  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)

Hestan 2006 Stephanie Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $50
Classic and harmonious, a very solid Napa 100% Cabernet that’s dry and firmly tannic in the mouth. Feels balanced, harmonious, ageworthy, a wine without seams or faults. Fruity, but not overly so, with the blackberries and black currants generously balanced by herbs, minerals and cedar. Very classic and noble wine, and one to cellar through at least 2018.  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)

Hestan 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

Top 100 Cellar Selections 2011
Another excellent Cabernet from Hestan. It’s riper and juicier than the ’06, showing the babyfat of this famous vintage. But it’s no less complex or ageworthy, just drinkable earlier. Shows concentrated blackberry, black currant, anise, licorice and smoky oak flavors, wrapped into dramatic, thick, firm tannins. Should develop over the next decade and beyond.  — S.H.  (9/1/2011)

Hestan 2007 Stephanie Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $50
Smooth and rich, a flashy Cabernet that impresses for sheer opulence. Notable especially for the texture, with perfectly ripe, rounded tannins, and the blackberry and cassis flavors are very fine. Another success from the fabulous 2007 vintage in Napa Valley.  — S.H.  (11/1/2011)

Hestan 2007 Chardonnay (San Francisco Bay)

  1. $50
The winery doesn’t tell us where in this gigantic, multi-county region the grapes came from, but it’s quite a good wine. Firm in citrusy acids, with a mineral undertow, it’s a dry, elegant wine with complex notes of pineapples, buttered toast and creamy lees. Lots of oak, but it’s integrated with the fruit.  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Hestan 2006 Meyer Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $45
Very ripe in blackberries, cherries, cassis, licorice and smoky oak, with deep, long flavors that are sweet in fruity essence. Already throwing some sediment, but still a very tannic wine, brooding and astringent. Needs a good six years, and could go the distance.  — S.H.  (11/1/2011)

Hestan 2005 Meyer Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $45
Still strong and jammy at the age of four-plus, with fresh blackberry, black currant and spicy oak flavors brightened with zingy acidity. It’s a distinctly New World wine, and a very good one, but it needs a year or three in the cellar to mellow and resolve.  — S.H.  (2/1/2010)

Hestan 2006 Stephanie Red (Napa Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $60
Quite ripe, verging on overripe, showing flavors of blackberries, black currants and cedar, with a very slight raisining on the finish. Shows good integration of oak and fruit, housed in firm tannins that are astringent in youth. Should develop bottle maturity for six years or so, at least.  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)
