Hewitson 2005 Old Garden Mourvèdre (Barossa Valley)

  1. $41
From vines more than 150 years old, this shows an unusually lush texture for Mourvèdre. Starts with a potpourri of spices, like cinnamon, clove and cola, then adds vanilla and black cherry flavors before ending with a flourish of coffee and tree bark. Long and velvety on the finish. Drink now–2015 or beyond.  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Hewitson 2005 Ned & Henry's Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $22
Hewitson’s best Shiraz to date is this lush, creamy-textured offering, filled with dense chocolate and blackberry aromas and flavors. Hints of coffee linger on the long, velvety finish. The price is fair, too. Drink now–2015.  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Hewitson 2003 Ned & Henry's Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $20
A well-built but drink-now Shiraz, with all of its elements fitting together very nicely. It is spicy and plummy on the nose, with good acidity, deep plum fruit and well integrated oak. A little woody on the finish, but overall, it’s a very nice package. Imported by USA Wine West.  — D.T.  (10/1/2005)

Hewitson 1999 Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $27
Red berries, cedar and a dull red cabbage note open this Shiraz; earthy, red-berry and burnt-sugar notes carry it through the herb-and-tree-bark finish. Medium to lean in the mouth.  — W.E.  (11/1/2001)

Hewitson 2004 Old Garden Mourvèdre (Barossa Valley)

  1. $36
Drinkable and enjoyable, and a varietal wine that you just don't run across often. Aromas are of dried plums and dates, with peanut and eucalyptus. Juicy on palate entry, its plum fruit round and pretty on the palate. Dry on the finish.  — D.T.  (8/1/2006)

Hewitson 2009 Lu Lu Sauvignon Blanc (Adelaide)

  1. $18
Pretty straightforward and citrusy, but very nicely balanced, with pineapple flavors working in harmony with the wine’s medium body and lack of overt grassy or herbal notes. Shows more lime and grapefruit on the finish. Drink now.  — J.C.  (9/1/2010)

Hewitson 2005 Miss Harry Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre (Barossa Valley)

An appealing blend of 55% Grenache, 33% Shiraz and 12% Mourvèdre, this offering from Hewitson boasts upfront scents of cherries, caramel and vanilla, then adds a hint of dark coffee or tree bark on the palate. The creamy texture and the lush fruit make this easy to drink now and over the next few years.  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Hewitson 2005 The Mad Hatter Single Vineyard Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $47
This is a darkly colored Shiraz, and the aromas follow in that vein: coffee and cola scents along with dark fruit. Yet the wine isn’t a big heavyweight; instead, those scents are joined by similar flavors, plus hints of dried fruit and black olives and an unusually crisp, acidic finish. Imported by USA Wine West.  — J.C.  (8/1/2008)
