Hilltown 2006 Chardonnay (Monterey County)

  • Best Buy
  1. $7
Sonoma Chard costing far more, this one showed off really well. Not as powerful in fruit, but dry and smooth, with delightful pineapple, crème brûlée, peaches and cream, and caramelized oak aromas and flavors.  — S.H.  (10/1/2008)

Hilltown 2010 Chardonnay (Monterey County)

  • Best Buy
  1. $7
You’ll be surprised how much class there is in this inexpensive Chardonnay. It’s rich in orange, pineapple and butterscotch flavors, while brisk acidity etches it in brightness. Finishes a little sweet, but you can stand this against many Chards that cost two or three times as much.  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

This is a fine value and actually a pretty nice Merlot. Dry and soft, it has very attractive flavors of cherries, cocoa, pepper and mint, and finishes with a nice, sweet touch of smoky vanilla.  — S.H.  (10/1/2008)

A little common and rustic, with some unripe, green tastes beside the blackberry flavors. But the wine is softly dry and nicely oaked, and will serve well for big parties.  — S.H.  (10/1/2008)

Hilltown 2007 Merlot (California)

Not bad for the price. A bit green and angular in tannins, but with nice black cherry and spice flavors, and the finish is clean and dry.  — S.H.  (8/1/2009)
