Hinman 2000 Rogue Red (Rogue Valley)

“Rogue” is right—there’s Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache and Malbec in here. It’s a good wine, but its components keep it from having much of a discernible style of its own. Roasted red berries and cherries dominate the palate; finishes with oak and a little acid. —D.M.

Kudos for the clear lucidity of this simple little wine, with its fragrant bouquet of chocolate and sweet cherry. In the mouth there are flavors of stem and earth, cranberries and tart acids, with a hint of bitterness in the tannins. —P.G.

Hinman 2001 Pinot Gris (Oregon)

The sweet, pleasant nose has plenty of citrus and tropical fruit. One whiff gets you excited. But the palate is nonexpressive, offering just the basics in terms of apples and spice. The finish, meanwhile, turns round and heavy, with no acid backbone to speak of. In the end you wind up wondering what happened to the promise of the bouquet. —M.S.

The aroma and taste of this simple wine is completely dominated by artificial butter; it’s like a mouthful of microwave popcorn. Many people like microwave popcorn, but not necessarily to drink. Apart from that, it’s light, watery, and lacking any distinct varietal character. —P.G.
