Högl 2007 Ried Bruck Viessling Smaragd Riesling (Wachau)

The terraced vineyard of Ried Bruck is a dominant site in Spitz, stony and impossibly steep. The excellent exposure gives richness to the wine, even in cooler years such as 2007. There is fine balance here, a ripe, perfumed character, with its aromas of wild flowers and thyme and its flavors of green pears and red apples.

Högl 2005 Ried Bruck Viessling Smaragd Riesling (Wachau)

I had a slight preference for Högl’s less expensive Loibner Vision Riesling Smaragd, but you can’t go wrong with this one either. Thick, viscous and full-bodied, it’s richly fruited but minerally as well, marrying diesel and smoke notes with orange and tangerine flavors. Long and spicy on the finish.

An impressively rich wine with slight sweetness that brings out an initial chalky character, followed swiftly by flavors of almonds and nutmeg on pears. The final softness is deceptive—this is a concentrated wine that needs to age.

Nicely balanced for such a big, full-bodied wine, with enough peppery spice, minerally intensity and pink grapefruit to keep the bulk in check. Does have some baked-apple notes suggestive of a warm vintage, but also a long, peppery finish. Drink now. Imported by Winemonger.

Based on our tastings, this winery fared well in the heat of 2003. Sure, this federspiel is full and lush--more like a smaragd, but if you put that aside, what is in the bottle excels. Honts of pepper, smoke, honey, melon and nectarine give great complexity, while the long finish drives home with a firm edge honed in peppery spice.
