Hourglass 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $75
A gloriously concentrated wine, filled with black cherry, plum, blackberry, chocolate, licorice, raisin and herb flavors. Plush, velvety, complex, elegant and voluptuous all the way to its long, long finish. Unfortunately, only 48 cases were made. The good news is that we’ll see as much as 800 cases for the 2000 vintage. Cellar Selection. —J.M.  — J.M.  (5/1/2002)

Hourglass 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $85
This is gorgeous. Smooth, rich, ripe and loaded with complex flavors. Black cherry, blackberry, plum, cloves, coffee, spice, chocolate, licorice, anise, menthol and eucalyptus all weave a kaleidoscope of taste for a tantalizing, heady and satisfying wine. Velvety tannins frame it all, leaving it long and lush at the end. Just when you think it’s over, a new wave of…  — J.M.  (12/15/2003)

Hourglass 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (St. Helena)

  1. $90
The oak jumps out—think char, vanilla and new barrels. But this magnificent wine is much more than that. It’s intensely ripe with cassis, pure and focused. It has sweet tannins and fine, good acidity and perfect balance. Superb right out of the bottle, but should hold through the decade.  — S.H.  (10/1/2004)

Hourglass 2006 Blueline Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $125
Shows lots of smoky woodspice on the nose, and then turns decadently rich in the mouth, with waves of cassis, dark chocolate and cedar, exotically spiced with anise, cardamom, cinnamon stick and black pepper. Despite the volume, this Cab is polished and elegant. Now through 2012.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Hourglass 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (St. Helena)

  1. $115
This supple Cabernet feels gentle and soft on entry, then stuns with hidden power and depth. Fully ripe, with chocolaty cassis and cherry flavors. Marked by firm tannins, it is generous now, yet should hold for a good 10 years.  — S.H.  (8/1/2006)

Hourglass 2009 Blueline Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $125
This is a big, tannic, midnight black Cabernet, rude in youth and barely drinkable. The tannins are powerful enough to lock down the palate. The grapes, grown in Calistoga, are very ripe in blackberries, currants and dark chocolate, but those tannins are stubbornly astringent. Almost old-fashioned in toughness despite very high alcohol, it’s a curiosity that seems…  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Hourglass 2006 Blueline Vineyard Merlot (Napa Valley)

  1. $75
Very big and smoky, an impressive young Merlot that grabs you by the collar and shakes you. Made by the veteran Robert Foley, it’s in his style, a ripe, powerful wine exuding massive flavors of black cherries, cassis and chocolate.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)
