What a special wine this is. It blasts forth with the pencil lead, cedar and black currant aromas of a great Bordeaux, and boasts the tannins that this mountain appellation is famous for. You could drink it now with a big steak, but this ageable Cab will be looking quite nice after 2010.

How big this wine is, but how drinkable now. It’s not just the fruit, which ranges from blackberries to cherries and cocoa, it’s the tannic structure. Somehow it’s soft and intense at once. Totally dry, and not overly alcoholic, this Zin picks up even more power on the finish.

Black as midnight and tough in tannins. Don’t touch this baby for a long time! Dry, balanced and oaky, it shows tremendous blackberry and currant fruit that should begin to reveal itself by 2010.

Smooth and sleek, with a finely crafted mesh of dark plum, blackberry, cassis, chocolate, coffee, cedar, raspberry and toast flavors. Beautifully balanced and layered, it serves up plenty of interest and pleasure. Long and lush on the finish.

This wine is very tannic now, but it’s a cellar candidate. Under that blanket of tannins is a fabulously ripe well of blackberry, cherry and dusty cocoa fruit. Drink 2009 and beyond.

Howell Mountain produces some of the most outsized red wines in California, and this zinfully delicious example packs a lot of punch, with great depth of flavor and a long, sweet finish. Perfect with oxtail stew or braised beef ribs.

This is a huge (16% alcohol) decisive, clearly Californian Zin. The flavors are massively rich and fruity and the wine is, in its own eccentric way, addictively good. Just be sure to bring a designated driver.

At 15-3/4% alcohol, this wine is a little hot, but that’s in keeping with the enormity of fruit. The blackberry tart and chocolate-covered cherry flavors are so enormous, they seem to require a package of equal size. The result is dry, balanced and delicious.
