Il Feuduccio Di S. Maria D'Orni 1999 Ursonia Montepulciano (Montepulciano d'Abruzzo)

  1. $39
Satisfying and delicious at every point. The bouquet is lovely; it delivers dense plum fruit, chili-like spice and mounds of wet earth. The palate is pure blackberry and dark plum, and it finishes smooth as silk, with just enough coarseness to add texture and grit. Firm but not hard. A definite winner from Abruzzo. Drink by the end of 2004.  — M.S.  (11/15/2003)

This non-filtered wine is not totally limpid in appearance although it does come on strong in terms of the intensity of its aromas. Well-developed mineral tones frame deep layers of black cherry, leather and spice.  — M.L.  (5/1/2009)

Higher up the pecking order than Il Feuduccio’s others, this wine is heavily extracted and a bit raisiny. Late-harvest comes to mind, although it’s far more fresh and dry than that. Still, the flavor profile is heavily slanted toward raisin and prune, while the stocky palate is soft and lush. Drink now. Imported by Empson (USA) Ltd.  — M.S.  (10/1/2006)

Il Feuduccio Di S. Maria D'Orni 1998 Ursonia Montepulciano (Montepulciano d'Abruzzo)

  1. $31
Like the ’99 normale, this wine doesn’t smell or taste like standard-fare Montepulciano. It has more character and quality, and it’s entirely rich, oaky and stylish. Modern in every sense of the word, with plum, blackberry and bitter chocolate flavors. The finish is smooth, solid and complete, and the mouthfeel sizzles courtesy of fine acids and light-framed tannins.  — M.S.  (11/15/2003)

Who knew that Montepulciano could be brought to such heights? This is a special, uncommon wine. It’s ripe, from a great vintage, and it is shining brightly now but will hold for another three to five years at least. Full of black cherry, berry skins and generous but balanced tannins. Perfect with osso buco or rack of lamb. Imported by Empson (USA) Ltd.  — M.S.  (10/1/2006)
