A blend of mainly Syrah, with Grenache, Mourvèdre and Viognier. Opens with brilliant, beautiful aromas of berries and fruit, chocolate, violets, herbs and spices, and smoky oak. In the mouth, there's fabulous complexity and an opulent, velvety smooth texture. Very dry and elegant, and the sweet, spicy finish goes on forever.

Io 2006 Ryan Road Vineyard Syrah (San Luis Obispo County)

Io has a really good track record with this Syrah, which is grown in Paso Robles. The ’06 is intricately structured, a dry wine with complex flavors of blackberries, currants, dates, mocha, leather, grilled meat, pepper and vanilla. Hard to resist drinking it now, but it should evolve in interesting ways over the next six years.

Pours dramatically dark, staining the sides of the glass with glycerine, suggesting a big, rich wine. And it is, opening with oaky blackberry and meaty aromas that turn robust on the palate with an explosion of fruit. Dense, intense and concentrated, this dry Rhone blend is best enjoyed in its youthful precocity.

Not as concentrated as the ’99, but an impressive wine. The aroma is especially attractive, with white pepper, cassis and grilled meat accented with smoky oak. Similar flavors, especially blackcurrant, and rich, fine tannins. Notable for the long finish. Mainly Syrah, with Grenache and Mourvèdre.
