J. Portugal Ramos

J Portugal Ramos Winery was founded in 1990 by João Portugal Ramos in the Estremoz region of Alentejo. According to our J Portugal Ramos wine reviews, Ramos introduced the benefits of modern technologies with an emphasis on low yields, occasional oak aging, and the preservation of a grape’s natural fruit flavors to Portuguese wineries as a pioneering wine consultant. The original J Portugal Ramos Vineyards are located near the ancient marble-filled town of Estremoz in Alentejo which he soon expanded to select locations in Tejo, Beiras and the Douro. The majority of J Portugal Ramos wines are produced from Aragonês, Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional, Castelão and Alicante Bouschet, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Merlot, although in smaller quantities. While they do produce a handful of white wines, it is the reds that typically find their way to the top of our J Portugal Ramos wine ratings. A delicious, smooth wine, all rounded fruit and sweetness to go with the more determined tannins that lie beneath. With great concentration, the wine has a feeling of power while preserving a core of juicy acidity and sweet red plum juice.  — R.V.  (11/1/2011)

J. Portugal Ramos 2006 Vila Santa Red (Alentejano)

Always an impressive wine, this latest vintage of Vila Santa shows its class. There is a fine balance between superrich fruit, which is then shaped by dry tannins and fresh, mouth-tingling acidity. It has a great structure, and will certainly age over 3–4 years.  — R.V.  (11/1/2008)

Big, tough tannins and dark brooding fruits give this wine a great sense of restrained power. It has firm muscles, offering support to the plush blue berry, currant and dark plum skins. It need good aging, at least over three years.  — R.V.  (2/1/2011)

J. Portugal Ramos 2003 Quinta da Viçosa Red (Alentejano)

From the hot 2003 vintage, this has big, superripe fruit, but manages to keep everything in check with vibrant fruit and elegance. The black fruits, powered and concentrated, also have acidity and great perfumes from the Touriga Nacional.  — R.V.  (12/15/2007)

An impressive, serious wine that shows great ripe fruits, concentrated tannins and a solid edge of wood aging. It is finely structured, its richness not taking away from its balance, although it certainly is no wimp. Enjoy with hearty meals.  — R.V.  (2/1/2011)

J. Portugal Ramos 2001 Syrah (Alentejano)

  1. $18
João Portugal Ramos has surrounded the fortress city of Estremoz with his vineyards. The Syrah just loves it in this hot, dry climate, giving a wine with aromas of violets and leather, huge tannins, rich jammy flavors and a sense of restrained power. Yet Portugal Ramos has also managed to get some elegance in this otherwise bruising wine. —R.V.  — R.V.  (12/31/2002)

This is an exotic blend of Aragonês, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon. With sophisticated tannins and layers of wood, this is a powerful, full-bodied wine, with just a touch of earthiness. Spice and herbs give extra complexity.  — R.V.  (12/1/2004)
