Jarvis 2009 Will Jarvis' Science Project Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $125
Although this wine’s price has increased over the years, its quality has remained constant. It’s an unusual blend of 95% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, with firm tannins and a cut of fresh acidity, giving it a rich cherry intensity. The sheer luxury of the mouthfeel alone merits this wine’s high score.  — S.H.  (12/1/2012)

Jarvis 2007 Will Jarvis' Science Project Cabernet Franc (Napa Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $105
A rich, dry and elegant Cab Franc, showing the fine tannins of Napa Valley, but with a fruitiness lighter and airier than either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. The flavors are pure red and black cherries, violets and Canadian bacon, accented with smoky new oak. Delicious and compelling, and should develop for up to six years.  — S.H.  (12/15/2009)

Jarvis 2007 Lake William Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $115
Napa reds don’t get richer than this. Made from roughly equal parts of Merlot and the two Cabernets, Sauvignon and Franc, with a squirt of Petit Verdot, it’s so sweet in blackberries and cherries and caramelized new oak, it’s almost like a dessert wine. But it’s totally dry. Dazzling and showy, the flashiness is given real substance by depth and finish. Drink now–2015.  — S.H.  (11/1/2011)

Jarvis 2008 Estate Merlot (Napa Valley)

  1. $75
Credit this Merlot for sheer enjoyability. It defines Merlot as the soft, drink-me-now Bordeaux red wine, full-bodied yet instantly likeable. Made from 100% Merlot, it’s extraordinairly rich in cherry fruit, while 100% new French oak adds a deft touch of buttered toast. The tannins are gentle, sweet and complex. This flashy, fleshy wine is great now, and will hold…  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Jarvis 2009 Estate Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

  1. $48
If this Chard had any more oak, the forests of France would be denuded. But the buttered toast and caramel work well, adding even greater richness to the huge pineapple, lemon custard and gingersnap cookie flavors. Drink this extravagant Chardonnay over the next six years.  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Jarvis 2010 Estate Grown Cave Fermented Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

  1. $58
The grapes for this estate Chardonnay are sourced from the winery’s vineyards way up in the Vaca Mountains. This is a flashy wine, showing the ripe tropical fruit, cream, smoke, honey and buttery qualities of a fine Chardonnay.  — S.H.  (12/1/2012)

Jarvis 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $85
At the age of six-plus years, this Cab still is dominated by the 100% new French oak in which it was aged. The fruit flavor, too, is young and primary, offering sweetly ripe cherries and blackberries. Even the tannins are fresh. The suggestion is continued cellaring, and the statistics concerning alcohol, acidity and pH suggest ideal balance. Hold for at least a…  — S.H.  (5/1/2010)

Jarvis 2007 Estate Grown Cave Fermented Cabernet Franc (Napa Valley)

  1. $80
Cabernet Franc is a difficult variety on its own, but Jarvis does an excellent job. This is still quite tannic, with a hard, astringent mouthfeel to the cherry, blackberry and dark-chocolate flavors. Give this a few more years of aging, although it doesn’t seem like a longterm ager.  — S.H.  (7/1/2012)
