Jean León 2007 Zemis Red (Penedès)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $145
Attractive berry and plum aromas come with dry spice, light toast and a hint of char and minerality. Lively and pure in the mouth, with good acidity pushing cassis, raspberry, light herb and spice flavors. Fresh and becoming more toasty on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc and Merlot that’ll be best from 2014 through 2020.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Jean León 1994 Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon (Penedès)

  1. $33
The jewel of Jean León’s current lineup. This is a pure, leafy, smoky Old World beauty with just enough modernity to keep it up to date. The flavors are big and broad, offering notes of bacon, spice, plum and tomato. Cinnamon and other sweet nuances appear toward the end.  — W.E.  (2/1/2003)

Jean León 2000 Zemis Red (Penedès)

  1. $126
A high-water mark for Jean León, which usually sticks to varietal wines. Zemis, on the other hand, is a blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Cab Franc that makes its point. After a tight, bruising, sulfuric beginning, the wine finds its groove, showing black cherry, plum and earth flavors. Thorough and rewarding; a fine red from Penedès.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Jean León 2001 Vinya La Scala Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon (Penedès)

  1. $25
Roasted and still robust 10 years after harvest, with aromas of grilled meat, fall leaves, tobacco and herbs. It’s round on the palate, with heat and slightly herbal and roasted core flavors surrounded by berry and pepper. A mature and interesting single-vineyard Cabernet from northeast Spain.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Jean León 1995 Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon (Penedès)

  1. $23
This is showing signs of early maturity. Its earthy, dusty quality suits the traditional cherry and cassis fruit. Some coffee, root beer and herbs give the finish a touch of the unusual. Yet it all works.  — W.E.  (2/1/2003)

Jean León 2000 Chardonnay (Penedès)

  1. $21
A fresh Chardonnay with fresh pineapple, pear and mild buttery aromas. The palate is solid, with good structure, while the flavors are pear, sweet golden apple and vanilla. The wine was barrel fermented and aged on the lees, so it has a round mouthfeel.  — W.E.  (2/1/2003)

Jean León 1996 Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon (Penedès)

  1. $23
More earthy and herbal than the ’95, with chocolate and licorice notes. Maybe the leafy quality is from the 15% Cab Franc. Ample cherry, cassis and licorice flavors, but it finishes tannic and hard, which shortens the finish.  — W.E.  (2/1/2003)

Jean León 1999 Merlot (Penedès)

  1. $20
Piercing aromas of bramble and herbs give it a slightly rustic bouquet. The mouth is forward and packs punch, with cherry and raspberry fruit. The finish is tight and dry, but it doesn’t turn hard. Aging in used Chardonnay barrels keeps the oak element in check.  — W.E.  (2/1/2003)
