Jean-Luc Colombo 1999 La Louvée Red (Cornas)

Dark, inky in color. What a wonderful bouquet this has developed, offering floral hints, notes of black olive and bright mulberry and blueberry fruit. This is still very youthful and incredibly packed with flavor. Although it seems creamy at first, it firms up on the finish, showing more iron-like minerality on the finish. Hold.  — J.C.  (4/1/2007)

Jean-Luc Colombo 1997 Les Ruchets Red (Cornas)

  1. $62
Maybe the best vintage for current consumption, the ’91 Les Ruchets features floral scents accompanied by hints of cherries and pomegranates, even some stone fruit flavors. Lush, supple and long. Drink now.  — J.C.  (4/1/2007)

Jean-Luc Colombo 2005 Terres Brulées Syrah (Cornas)

  1. $78
Cornas is Colombo's home turf, and the 2005 Terres Brulees shows his mastery, offering up beefy, cedary notes but also cracked pepper and cassis alongside iron-like mineral notes. This is full-bodied and intense, with plenty of structure; drink 2015-2025.  — J.C.  (4/1/2010)

Jean-Luc Colombo 2009 La Louvée Syrah (Cornas)

  1. $84
A full-bodied, rich wine, with tannins either supremely smoooth or just concealed under masses of plummy fruit. Yet despite the enormous ripeness, it’s not lacking nuance, boasting savory notes of espresso and leather. Drinkable now, but should age through 2023, at least.  — J.C.  (10/1/2012)

Jean-Luc Colombo 2008 La Louvée Syrah (Cornas)

The 2008 Cornas from Colombo have turned out very nicely, led by this effort. Scents of cracked pepper, bold blackberries and a hint of coffee presage a big-fruited wine, but one with ample complexity of savory notes. It’s full bodied and richly textured, with a long, chewy finish. Drink 2015–2025.  — J.C.  (10/1/2011)

Jean-Luc Colombo 2004 La Louvée Red (Cornas)

  1. $88
Strongly ferrous and minerally, with blackberry and blueberry fruit. There’s no evidence of the fragility of some 2004 northern Rhônes. This is rich, concentrated and meaty, yet creamy, with supple tannins. Very flattering, with a long finish. This should age well.  — J.C.  (4/1/2007)

Jean-Luc Colombo 2004 Les Ruchets Syrah (Cornas)

  1. $88
Toastier, with cedary components and dark flavors of espresso and black olive. This is very firm, dense and muscular—the essence of concentrated Cornas opening with air to show more floral notes. Hold 10 years or more.  — J.C.  (4/1/2007)

Jean-Luc Colombo 2005 Force One Syrah (Cornas)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $137
On the oaky side, even for Colombo, but charged with superripe fruit as well, Force One makes a statement. Blackberries are slathered with chocolate and vanilla overtones, there's a rich, lush texture in the mouth, and the finish is long and mouthwatering. Drink now-2020.  — J.C.  (4/1/2010)
