Jekel 1999 FOS Reserve Gravelstone Vineyard - Est. Res. Collection Chardonnay (Monterey)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
Clearly an older wine, picking up a bottle bouquet of dried herbs, lees and yeast, riding on top of basic peach, pear and tropical fruits. Drinks very dry and crisp. The fruit is beginning to fade, leaving behind flavors of dried leaves, herbs, minerals and spice. An interesting wine of considerable nuance and subtlety.  — S.H.  (8/1/2003)

Jekel 2001 Winemaker’s Collection Pinot Noir (Monterey)

  1. $19
Rather light in color and in body, and as silky as taffeta. Pure, bright cherry jam, cola, orange zest, clove and mocha, with crisp acids and a smoky oak veneer. Delicious and sensual.  — S.H.  (12/15/2004)

Jekel 2001 Sanctuary Red (Arroyo Seco)

This wine's blackberry fruit wears a hearty overlay of chocolate and coffee. The nose follows the same profile, with a dash of anise or eucalyptus. Acids on the finish are firm and crisp. A food-friendly wine; a blend of 59% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, with small parts Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc.  — W.E.  (9/2/2004)

  1. $11
A delightful wine, and a classically inexpensive Monterey Riesling. Bone dry and crisp in acidity, it shows citrus, flower and mineral flavors, with a relieving touch of honey and vanilla. Sommeliers should scoop this one up. Production was 18,000 cases.  — S.H.  (12/1/2009)

Jekel 1998 Winemaker's Collection Syrah (Monterey)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $16
Both the nose and the palate have a strong blackberry fruit backbone. Reviewers round out the bouquet with toast, walnut and butter aromas; licorice, caramel and coffee flavors jazz up the fruit on the palate. A big, smooth mouthfeel and a fruit-driven but butterscotchy finish will please both oenophiles and wine neophytes. Editors’ Choice.  — W.E.  (10/1/2001)

Jekel 2001 Winemaker's Collection Merlot (Monterey)

  1. $15
Here’s one of the fruitier Merlots of the year. It’s a real blast of jammy cherry, blackberry and black raspberry flavor, but for all the richness, it’s balanced and dry. The soft, smooth tannins are a delight.  — S.H.  (4/1/2004)

Jekel 2008 Gravelstone Chardonnay (Arroyo Seco)

  • Best Buy
  1. $13
A clean, brisk Chardonnay made from this small, cool part of Monterey County’s Salinas Valley. Shows its region’s bright acidity, and also its long hangtime flavors of pineapples, peaches, green apples, limes and minerals. Nothing fancy or showy, just a really nice Chard at a fair price.  — S.H.  (10/1/2010)
