This full-bodied, richly textured Shiraz outpunches its weight class, offering licorice, blackberry and plum aromas and fruit-driven flavors that pick up savory nuances of coffee and black olive on the knockout finish.

Though it’s crisp and fresh in the mouth, this wine has some weight (and some oily viscosity) to it. Starts off in the mouth with a burst of sweetness, and a limey, grassy streak carries it through to the finish. Nose is fruity, with nectarine and mango highlights.

This Shiraz is rich in fruit yet slender in body. There’s eucalyptus on the nose, too, backed by limestone and plum aromas. The blackberry, and even blueberry, fruit is taut yet concentrated, and brightened by refreshing eucalyptus notes. The minty-eucalyptus crispness clings on through the finish, where it’s moderated by a wheaty, pastry-crust close. At this price…

Blackberry and eucalyptus aromas with a coffeelike accent set the stage for a full, smooth wine. Vanilla bolsters bright blackberry flavors on the palate, and fades into a substantial finish. Very impressive for an under-$20 Shiraz. Imported by Negociants USA. Inc.

A little disappointing for a Lodge Hill Shiraz, with prominent eucalyptus notes that are slightly overbearing in the context of otherwise pleasant vanilla and berry flavors. Lacks the richness and depth needed to support all of the menthol. Drink now–2016.

Oysters, porches, weddings—the Lodge Hill is just this type of wine. Citrus peel on the nose ushers in gooseberry and chalk flavors on the palate. It’s clean and refreshing, with a medium-length finish. Imported by Negociants U.S.A., Inc.

Creamier and fuller than other Clare Shirazes at its price point, this bottling offers spice, plum and sweet tart flavors. The drawback for me is a creamy-sweet lactic aroma—like a nose full of cheesecake—but that might be a turn-on for others. Imported by Negociants USA, Inc.
