J.J. Mchale 1999 Syrah (Clear Lake)

A very dark wine, inky purple, that stains the glass with glycerine, it opens with powerful aromas of black pepper. The pepper theme reprises on the palate, along with blackberries. The wine is very dry and feels thick and heavy, the result of low acids. Much work remains to be done, but this early result is promising.

J.J. Mchale 1999 Cabernet Franc (Clear Lake)

Darkly purple, this wine smells young, too. Blueberries, earth and tobacco aromas lead to dry flavors of boysenberries and other dark berries, and soft tannins. Light on the oak, it’s not a deeply layered wine, but it’s honestly made and likeable, and will come alive with food.
