Joan Simó 2005 Les Eres Vinyes Velles Red (Priorat)

$84
A great Priorat, plain and simple. And while we have always liked Les Eres from Joan Simó, this vintage is the best we’ve tried. The nose is beautiful: coffee, cola, schist, black fruit and herbs rise up. In the mouth, there’s strength but restraint; huge black fruit, pulsing tannins and subtleties. Power and precision as well. A brilliant wine that can be drunk…

Joan Simó 2006 Les Eres Vinyes Velles Red (Priorat)

Pungent up front, with dry bayberry, leather, jam notes and schisty minerality. The palate is all about structure, snappy acids, sinewy tannins and lively, full-force red-fruit and plum flavors. Like in the past, this is a top-notch Priorato that holds its form through the acid-driven finish. Best from 2011–2015.

Joan Simó 2006 Sentius Red (Priorat)

$33
A little heavy at first, but airing reveals a robust and stirring bouquet of plum and berry aromas mixed with coffee and leather. The palate is pure and deep, with a lush set of blackberry, ripe plum and berry syrup flavors. Shows a fine structure, a long and warm finish, and the potential to age another 5–8 years.

Joan Simó had great success in 2005. This wine is excellent and the higher-end Les Eres is outstanding, so bottom line: buy Simó from 2005. Getting back to Sentius, a so-called “second” wine, it is dark, sexy, smooth and shows true Priorat accents of schist, coffee, cola and berry aromas. The flavors are flashy and fresh, with mammoth black cherry, plum and coffee…

Joan Simó 2006 Les Eres Especial dels Carners Red (Priorat)

$122
Deep, sweet and lusty on the nose, with a hint of animal and whole lot of black fruit. The palate is saturated and jammy, with roasted, ripe berry flavors and a ripe, silky finish. Not hard or tannic in the least, with a spot of Priorat’s patented schisty minerality. Drink now through 2015.

Joan Simó 2002 Les Eres Vinyas Velles Red (Priorat)

The definition of old-vines Priorato can be found within this bottle. The Garnacha is very old, the Cariñena even older, and some mature Cabernet Sauvignon adds spine. On the nose, there’s a lot of barrique. The palate is snappy, almost acidic, and thus the flavors run toward pie cherry and raspberry. Classic in style; an Old World throwback. Imported by Jorge…

Joan Simó 2003 Les Sentius Red (Priorat)

This younger-vines mix of Garnacha, Carignan, Cab Sauvignon and Syrah is very attractive and loaded with graphite, schisty mineral and black cherry aromas. The palate comes in waves, with the first delivering plum and berry and the second offering chocolate, herbs and lavender. Quite pretty and very tannic. Hold until 2008, if possible.
