Josef Biffar 2001 Deidesheimer Kieselberg Kabinett Riesling (Pfalz)
Price
$16
This fairly large-scaled kabinett is also fairly dry. A stony, minerally nose leads into flavors that hint at stone fruit (plums?) but veer toward river stones. More intellectual than hedonistic. —J.C.

Josef Biffar 2001 Wachenheimer Altenburg Spätlese Riesling (Pfalz)
Price
$32
If you are a fan of oily, dieselly character in your Riesling, you’ll like this more than I’ve rated it here. It’s intensely mineral, like you’ve sprinkled powdered rock over Macintosh apples, and has an oily texture that contrasts with the crispness and delineation in so many other Rieslings from this vintage. —J.C.
