JR Wine 2008 George's Vineyard Zinfandel (Napa Valley)

For the second year running, this bottling is a superb Zinfandel. It’s as rich and ripe as they get, bursting with fresh raspberries, cherries and mocha, and that briary, brambly quality of wild forest nettles. Yet it’s thoroughly dry, with thick, refined tannins. Beautiful now for its effusive fruit, the wine should slowly slide over the next six years.

Big, rich, extracted and just beautiful. It’s a high-octane Zin, with high alcohol and ripe, spicy flavors, making it a classic example of its type. Just massive in blackberries, black cherries, beef teriaki, cola, pepper, Indian spices and sandalwood. Drink this decadently good wine from now–2013.

Quite a good young Cab, deeply flavored in red and black currants, plums, chocolate and oak. Has a weight, density and balance that feel important and authoritative. Not an ager, but epitomizes a delicious Napa Cab to drink now.

JR Wine 2009 George’s Vineyard Zinfandel (Napa Valley)

Just delicious. Feels like a modern, cult-style Napa Cabernet, soft and complex and slightly sweet, with tannins so finely ground, it’s drinkable now. The flavors are Cabernet-like also, with blackberries,blueberries, mocha and spices, although its briary, brambly quality is distinctive to Zinfandel.
