Easily deserves its high score due to the ripe cassis flavors and near-perfect tannins. Caresses and seduces the palate with the soft velvety intensity of a fine liqueur. Yet some tough tannins and firm acidity make for a scour on the palate. May or may not age; hard to tell. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

A well-made Merlot brimming with lush blackcurrant, cherry and spice flavors. The tannins are velvety smooth but considerable, creating a puckery mouthfeel. If you need to drink it now, do so with rich beef or lamb dishes. Otherwise, stick it in the cellar for a few years.

Better known as a Napa Cabernet house, Judd’s Hill has produced this old vine Petite Sirah, and it rocks. Juicy and ripe, it offers a huge blast of blackberries, cherries, red currants, blueberries, cola, sweet leather and cinnamon spice. The tannins are very thick but very finely ground, which gives this massive wine elegance.

This is certainly a big, bold Pet wine, the kind lovers of the variety treasure. Dry and tannic, it’s explosive in extremely ripe cherry and black raspberry jam flavors, with all kinds of mushroomy, leathery, chocolaty, spicy complexities. As big as the tannins are, they’re of the modern, melted kind, making the wine instantly drinkable.

A good Cabernet for drinking now, with some extra features of fanciness. It’s dry, soft and packs plenty of blackberry and cherry jam flavors.

Not even in the same ballpark as this winery’s excellent Juliana bottling, which costs the same. This is a decent wine, but the flavors have a tobaccoey, dried-herb edge, and the tannins are rustic.

Light in color and body, this is a silky Pinot Noir for everyday fare. It shows cola, cherry jam, persimmon and Asian spice flavors, with a coating of toasty oak.

A disappointment from a winery that’s earned Cab scores over 90 for so many years. This one’s shy of the mark, a bit thin and weedy in fruit, although it has polished tannins and a nice, dry structure.
