Kason 2006 Black Label Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)
Price
$26
Solid fruit brings firm, taut black cherry and cola flavors to the front. This is a muscular, flavorful, somewhat blocky wine that brings Pinot Noir up to burger wine status—and you may take that as a compliment. Some barrel toast adds butter and almond to the finish.

Kason 2006 Barrel Select Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)
Price
$21
Kason’s Barrel Select brings a lot of muscle and weight for the price. The fruit is packed and powerful, a mélange of cherries, plums and spice. It’s a bit sharp and high-toned, nicely balanced, and persistent, with a peppery finish.

Kason 2006 Old Vine Reserve Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)
Price
$29
Given 22 months in new French oak, this reserve Pinot Noir still brings the fruit front and center. Blackberries rule here, but there is a strong menthol/mint streak as well, which leaves the palate feeling as if a curiously strong breath mint has recently passed through. Kason seems to have great fruit sources, packaged in a rather rustic style, but offering quite…

Kason 2007 Estate Reserve Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)
Online Exclusive
Price
$28
This reserve is the best of Kason’s 2007 releases, with cranberry fruit, minty spice, moderate tannins and overall balance. The thinness of the vintage shows through, and this will need to be drunk now, rather than cellared. Aging in 80% new French oak puts some toast into the finish.

Kason 2002 Barrel Select Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)
Price
$39
Very fragrant, with dried, dusty notes of saddle, barnyard, earth and fruit leather. Not an elegant wine, but plenty of flavor to it. Drink it up; this one’s ready.

Kason 2007 Barrel Select Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)
Online Exclusive
Price
$24
This is cool-climate Pinot Noir, with the attendant herbal flavors that bring in forest floor, pine needle, tomato leaf and bark. It’s spicy and sharp, focused and tannic, with a toasty finish from aging in 60% new French oak barrels.

Kason 2008 Black Label Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)
Online Exclusive
Price
$24
Roundly fruity—almost candied—with the sweet, fruitcake spices competing with a leathery, barnyard note. Turns slightly bitter and roasted in the finish. Strong flavors, but not for everyone.

Kason 2007 Black Label Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)
Online Exclusive
Price
$20
Distinctive, with a strong flavor of cherry—much beyond the usual cherry found in many red wines. The fruit is backed with stiff tannins, slightly herbal, and a streak of vanilla/caramel. The finish is incomplete; the fruit drops off and the wine turns gluey.
