Very big in tannins, a tough, hard wine now, but what fruit! Rich in sweet-sour black and red cherry, plum, milk chocolate and oak through the long finish. Terrific wine, but should be cellared for maximum enjoyment. Best after 2007.

Kathryn Hall Vineyards 2003 Sacrashe Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

What a roll this winery has been on the last several vintages. The ’03 is huge, showing masses of forward, classic Cabernet fruit. Just erupts with dark berry-cherry, plum, boysenberry and coffee flavors with a rich, butterscotchy, gingersnap cookie note. But the tannins bite from this hilly vineyard. Best 2009–2015.

Kathryn Hall Vineyards 2000 Sacrashe Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

Big-time Napa Cabernet, delicious and exciting. Fruity aromas of cassis and blackcurrants are swimming in vanilla and spicy smoke from oak aging, and the tannins are soft and ripely sweet. Lacks a bit of concentration and is not an ager, but a beautiful wine now.

Kathryn Hall Vineyards 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

Hall made its reputation with Rutherford Cabs grown in the Sacrashe vineyard. This valley-wide Cab was made from grapes from all over the valley, Atlas Peak and Oak Knoll to St. Helena. The wine is very good, with ripe, modern-style cherry, cassis and oak flavors and ripe tannins, but it lacks the elegant complexity of the Sacrashe bottling. Best now and through 2010.

The winery made its bones with its fabulous Sacrashe Cabernet from Rutherford. This is their first release from Diamond Mountain, and the result is quite interesting.
