Kendall-Jackson

Land use attorney Jess Stonestreet Jackson bottled his first Kendall-Jackson wine in 1982, and quickly garnered acclaim for the winery’s Chardonnays. Today, its vineyards comprise 14,000 coastal acres planted to a multitude of grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Riesling, Syrah, Malbec, Muscat-Canelli, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir. Jackson died of cancer in 2011, but the family business continues, encompassing many wine labels, such as Cambria, Stonestreet, Edmeades, La Crema, Cardinale, Lokoya, Hartford Family Winery, Vérité, Atalon, Carmel Road, Murphy-Goode, La Jota, Freemark Abbey, Byron Estates and Arrowood in the United States; Château Lassegue in France; Tenuta di Arceno in Italy; Yangarra in Australia; and Calina in Chile.

Kendall-Jackson 2006 Highland Estates Trace Ridge Red (Knights Valley)

  1. $125
Dark, viscous and monumental, this Cabernet-based Bordeaux blend detonates on the palate with black currants, chocolate and cedar concentration, wrapped into the most perfect tannins. Outstanding, and should age for many years. Only 277 cases of this wine, which was grown on steep hillsides, were produced.  — S.H.  (7/1/2009)

Kendall-Jackson 2007 Highlands Estates Trace Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon (Knights Valley)

  1. $70
Superb, opulent, just wonderful. Hard to exaggerate the beauty of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fantastically ripe and rich in black cherries, currants, sandalwood and spices, with a grounding streak of herbs. Beyond the flavors is the near-perfect structure, marked by smooth, complex tannins. Finishes sweet but completely dry, the paradox of a great wine. Drink…  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Kendall-Jackson 2005 Stature Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $120
Filled with black and red berries and stone fruits that have a smoky, grilled edge, this dramatic Cabernet-based Bordeaux blend hails from several great vineyards, mainly Stagecoach, which is up on Atlas Peak. It drinks well now at the age of four-plus years, showing lush fruit that’s just beginning to dry out and achieve bottle bouquet. Feels sweet and soft in the…  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Kendall-Jackson 2004 Stature Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $110
Stature is always a Bordeaux blend, but varies in vineyard source each year. This ’04 is soft, utterly delicious and fully drinkable now. It’s rich in black currant, cherry pie filling, plum, anise and spice flavors, generously aged in smoky new oak. Made in the modern style, it will hold effortlessly through 2012, at least.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Kendall-Jackson 2005 Highlands Estate Napa Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (Mount Veeder)

From up on Mount Veeder comes this lush, dramatically complex Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s really fine, with ripe, intricately layered tannins that give the wine a texture of dramatic importance, and luscious Cabernet flavors that change from sip to sip. Blackberries, currants, cherries, cedar, it’s all there in this 100% varietal wine, a very great expression of Napa…  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)

Kendall-Jackson 2006 Highland Estates Napa Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (Mount Veeder)

  1. $70
The huge, thick tannins are all from the wine’s 1,500-foot mountain vineyard, but they’re so soft and refined, the wine is instantly drinkable, although it will age for many years. Tastes dramatically luscious for the depth and length of black currant, olive, chocolate and cedar flavors.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Kendall-Jackson 2002 Stature Red Wine (Napa Valley)

  1. $95
This is a tremendous Cabernet-based wine. A mixture of Atlas Peak, Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder and St. Helena bench grapes, it’s a masterpiece of blending. Seductive now for its lush, soft and brilliant cherry, cassis and mocha flavors that are finished with the smoky vanilla and toast of 96% new French oak, the wine is decadently good.  — S.H.  (6/1/2007)

Stature is K-J’s top Cabernet-based Bordeaux blend, and can come from any of the winery’s vineyards. The ’03 hails from Atlas Peak, Mount Veeder and Knights Valley. The wine is immaculate and impeccable, with impressive black currant, cedar, pencil lead and smoky vanilla aromas and flavors that finish with a great deal of complexity and interest.
