Kings Mountain 2006 Meritage (Santa Cruz Mountains)
Online Exclusive
Price
$48
Rather tough and gritty now, this bone dry wine offers herb, tobacco and cedar flavors, with suggestions of cherries and currants. It’s the answer to folks who complain that California Cabernets are fruit and oak bombs. Could surprise with 5–7 years in the bottle.

Kings Mountain 2007 Pinot Noir (Santa Cruz Mountains)
Price
$45
A bit soft and heavy in structure, with cherry, cola and sandalwood flavors. Pretty good, but at this price, it needs greater vibrancy and depth. Drink now.

Kings Mountain 2005 Meritage (Santa Cruz Mountains)

Dry and clean, but this Cabernet-based Bordeaux blend shows a surprising sharpness and hardness for a wine from this vintage, at this age. The black currant flavors are buried by tannic astringency. Doesn’t seem likely to age.

Kings Mountain 2005 Pinot Noir (Santa Cruz Mountains)

Simple and soft, a wine whose modest cherry and cedar flavors lack depth, structure and interest. It’s okay, but there’s very little going on, especially at this price.

Kings Mountain 2004 Pinot Noir (Santa Cruz Mountains)

Smells like cheap Port and drinks harsh and dry, with flavors of raisins and stewed black cherries. Drinkable, but just barely.
